Digital SAT Scoring Explained for Nepali Students 2026

The official SAT report contains a total score from 400 to 1600, a Reading and Writing section score from 200 to 800 and a Math section score from 200 to 800. The total is the sum of the two section scores. It also provides a score range, percentile comparisons, College and Career Readiness benchmarks and knowledge-and-skills information across four domains in each section. Read these pieces together rather than treating the total as a complete diagnosis.

Each section uses two-stage adaptive delivery. Module 1 has a mixture of difficulty levels, and performance routes the student to a targeted Module 2 mix. The section score uses results across both modules. College Board states that students are not advantaged merely because they see a higher-difficulty Module 2 or disadvantaged merely because they see a lower-difficulty one; a range of section scores is possible on either path. Trying to infer a score from perceived difficulty is therefore unreliable.

College Board uses Item Response Theory in the digital SAT Suite. Scores reflect several factors, including whether answers were right or wrong, characteristics such as question difficulty and the probability that the response pattern suggests guessing. Consequently, two students who answer the same number of questions correctly may earn different section scores. An unofficial “one mistake equals a fixed number of points” rule cannot reproduce the operational scoring model.

Each module contains two pretest questions that do not count toward the score. These questions allow College Board to evaluate material for possible future use, and they are mixed into the test so a student cannot identify them. The correct strategy is to try every question. College Board says that, for students working honestly, guessing is better than leaving a question blank—especially after eliminating one or more options—because there is no separate penalty for a wrong answer.

Use benchmarks and percentiles as context, not guarantees. College Board currently identifies 480 as the Reading and Writing benchmark and 530 as the Math benchmark, and the report shows comparison groups. A university may publish its own score context, testing policy or scholarship criteria, which can differ from a College Board benchmark. Admission and funding also depend on grades, course rigor, essays, activities, recommendations, finances and the institution’s full review.
