Digital SAT Format and Timing Explained for Nepali Students

The SAT contains two sections in a fixed order: Reading and Writing, followed by Math. College Board assigns 64 minutes and 54 questions to Reading and Writing, divided into two 32-minute modules. Math receives 70 minutes and 44 questions, divided into two 35-minute modules. The two sections therefore contain 98 questions across 134 minutes of testing, with a separate ten-minute break between them. Approved accommodations can change an individual student’s timing.

Each section uses multistage adaptive testing. Module 1 contains a broad mix of easy, medium and hard questions. Performance in that module determines whether Module 2 presents a targeted mix that is generally more or less difficult. Both Module 2 paths still contain mixed difficulty, and the section score uses performance across both modules. Students should not try to diagnose the route during the test; they should answer every current question carefully.

Reading and Writing uses short passages or passage pairs with one question at a time. The tested domains are Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas and Standard English Conventions. Pacing should recognise that a concise grammar item and a data-supported inference item may require different amounts of time. Use the Bluebook timer and mark-for-review tool, but keep a planned final review window rather than postponing every uncertain question.

Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Most questions are multiple choice, while some require the student to enter an answer. Bluebook provides a reference sheet and an embedded Desmos calculator, and an acceptable external calculator can be used under the current policy. Efficient students still decide whether mental reasoning, handwritten algebra or the calculator is the fastest reliable method for each problem.

A module is its own timing boundary. Students may preview later questions, return to earlier questions and change answers while that module remains open. When its time ends, the test advances and the student cannot return to it. Practise finishing a first pass with enough time to revisit marked questions, confirm student-produced responses and check common errors. The ten-minute break should be used for approved rest, hydration or a snack rather than reviewing secure test content.
