Do Nepali Students Need the SAT in 2026? University and Scholarship Decision Guide

The SAT is an undergraduate admission test. It is most relevant to students applying after +2, A-Level, CBSE, high school or an equivalent qualification. Graduate, MBA and doctoral applicants normally research GRE or GMAT requirements instead. Before doing any preparation, confirm that the SAT belongs to your intended study level and that the institutions on your shortlist will consider the score.

Universities may be test-required, test-optional or test-blind, and the wording can vary by applicant type, programme, campus, entry term and scholarship. Required means a valid score is part of the application. Test-optional generally means an applicant may choose whether to submit a score. Test-blind means the institution does not use the score for the stated decision. Never rely on an old blog, social post or another student’s previous intake; open the current official admission page and save the relevant policy.

For a test-optional university, ask a second question: would a competitive SAT result add useful evidence to this particular profile? A score may help demonstrate academic readiness when the student wants another standardised data point, but it should be compared with the published score context and the strength of the rest of the file. If practice evidence is far below a sensible submission range and the university does not require a score, spending months on the SAT may have a lower return than improving essays, grades, English proficiency or application quality.

Scholarship policies need a separate check. Some universities publish merit scholarship criteria that use academic records, testing or a broader holistic review; others do not guarantee funding from a score. Search the official financial-aid and international scholarship pages, record whether a separate application is required and note the priority deadline. Do not treat a strong SAT score as a promise of admission or scholarship.

Timing can change the decision. Work backward from the earliest application or scholarship deadline and include registration, preparation, a full Bluebook practice cycle, score release and a possible retake. The SAT contains Reading and Writing plus Math, with 98 questions across 2 hours and 14 minutes. A diagnostic test is therefore more useful than guessing readiness from school marks alone.
