Confirm that the student completed an eligible program and held a valid study permit when the online PGWP application was submitted. Save the exact submission timestamp, payment receipt, application number, study permit and passport. An application started in the portal but transmitted after permit expiry has a different status and work analysis.

The graduate must also have been eligible to work off campus without a work permit during the study program and must not have worked more hours than authorized. Review regular-term schedules, scheduled breaks, final-semester status and every employer or self-employment record. A previous breach is not erased by graduation or by paying the PGWP fee.

All conditions operate together. A person who applied after changing to visitor, who needs restoration, who studied in a program that did not permit off-campus work or who exceeded authorized hours should not assume interim work eligibility. Stop and obtain advice from an authorized immigration professional before accepting shifts.

Retain the PGWP submission confirmation, fee receipt, study permit, completion letter, final transcript and proof that the application remains in process. IRCC may issue a letter confirming that the graduate can work for a stated period. The letter helps an employer but does not replace the underlying eligibility conditions.

If the initial letter expires while the application is still pending, current IRCC guidance explains how eligible applicants can request proof of authorization through the web form. Keep a copy of the request and any response. An employer can use the official page and documents to assess the continued authorization rather than relying on social-media screenshots.

A SIN expiry does not by itself decide immigration authorization. Contact Service Canada about updating a record when the work permit is issued and provide the employer with accurate status evidence in the meantime. Never edit an IRCC letter, conceal an expiry or promise an approval date that IRCC has not given.

Work can continue while the qualifying application is processed, but it must stop if IRCC refuses the PGWP, the applicant withdraws the application or the underlying authorization otherwise ends. Read every portal message immediately and give the employer accurate notice. Continuing after a refusal because a shift was already scheduled can be unauthorized work.

Travel outside Canada does not necessarily cancel a properly filed PGWP application, but re-entry is a separate decision. The graduate needs the correct passport and temporary resident visa or eTA and must satisfy the border officer. Before travel, check whether remote work, a return delay or an expired entry document changes the practical plan.

If IRCC requests documents, biometrics, fees or clarification, respond within the stated deadline. Keep contact details current and check spam folders. A returned or incomplete application can undermine maintained status and work assumptions, so verify the submission checklist and retain the full uploaded package.

When approved, review the occupation conditions and expiry date on the work permit. PGWP validity depends on program length and can be shortened by passport expiry or other factors. Apply for a new passport early when appropriate and follow the current process if IRCC permits an extension for passport-limited issuance.

Prepare a financial fallback because processing time and outcome are uncertain. Do not make tuition, housing, debt or permanent-residence decisions on the assumption of a specific PGWP length. If refused, stop work, read the reasons and obtain qualified advice promptly about reconsideration, judicial review, restoration or departure; not every option applies to every case.
