The right mode depends on what the student cannot reliably do alone

Self-study and coaching are delivery choices; progress still requires current content, deliberate practice, correction and honest checkpoints.

Start with programme policy and a diagnostic. If the target programme does not consider GRE scores, preparation time may be better spent elsewhere. When a score is relevant, use a current-format POWERPREP baseline and an Issue essay. Classify Quant, Verbal, Writing and timing gaps. The size and type of those gaps determine whether independent study is sufficient or whether targeted instruction and feedback can save time.

Self-study offers schedule control and can reduce local course cost. ETS provides test overviews, sample questions, strategies, Math Review, POWERPREP and official books and services. A self-study student still needs a written weekly plan, an error log, spaced vocabulary review, essay feedback from a qualified reader, protected official simulations and the discipline to revisit weak skills rather than repeatedly practise favourite areas.

Coaching can be valuable when foundations are weak, explanations are difficult to evaluate, the student needs immediate doubt support, writing has no reviewer or consistency breaks down. Compare teacher expertise across Quant, Verbal and Analytical Writing, diagnostic use, class size, homework review and mock correction. Lecture hours alone do not prove value. Ask to see how a real error changes the next assignment.

A hybrid plan often fits working students and graduates. Use teacher-led lessons for difficult concepts, Verbal reasoning and writing feedback, while official resources and app practice support independent work. Recordings can recover missed lessons and reinforce complex explanations. The student remains responsible for completing retrieval, targeted sets and timed practice; coaching does not remove the need for substantial work outside class.

Compare full cost and time. Include course fee, travel, books or apps, official test registration, additional score reports and the opportunity cost of delayed applications. Evaluate the earliest deadline and the number of available weekly hours. A cheaper option is poor value if weak feedback causes repeated attempts, but a larger package is unnecessary if the student needs only a few focused corrections.

MKS Education offers physical, online and hybrid preparation with recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice, physical books, eight guided weeks, six-month access and continued support. Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. Students should inspect the current system and terms. MKS cannot guarantee a score, admission, scholarship or assistantship.

Diagnose first

Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.

Verify claims

Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Programme policyA score must be relevant before preparation.Exact department and intake rule.
DiagnosticMode should follow measured needs.Quant Verbal Writing and timing profile.
Self-disciplineIndependent plans need consistent execution.Weekly hours and completed review cycles.
Concept gapsSome foundations need explanation.Ability to learn and verify methods alone.
Writing feedbackAWA cannot be reviewed by answer key.Qualified comments and revision process.
Doubt supportUnresolved errors can repeat.Response time and explanation quality.
AccountabilityDeadlines protect momentum.Assignments checkpoints and follow-up.
Official resourcesFormat should come from ETS.Samples POWERPREP and current guidance.
Hybrid optionDifferent skills need different support.Teacher work plus independent practice.
RecordingsRevision can improve class value.Every mode and access period.
Full costHeadline fee excludes time and services.Travel materials test and repeat costs.
Outcome limitsNo method controls the official result. No score admission or funding promise.
MKS Education: MKS can review the baseline and show which gaps need live teaching, which can use self-study, and how recordings, app practice, books and checkpoints fit one plan.
Connected preparation

What makes the MKS GRE learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GRE practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official ETS resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Verify that GRE is relevant to the target programmes.
  • Take POWERPREP and obtain an Issue essay review.
  • Identify tasks the student cannot reliably diagnose or correct alone.
  • Compare the full written coaching package with a realistic self-study plan.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not assume self-study means using random free questions.
  • Do not buy coaching without checking feedback and mock review.
  • Do not ignore the substantial independent work needed in either mode.
  • Do not treat a large package or a low fee as proof of quality.
Current test context

Prepare for the GRE General Test students now take

ETS lists one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections in the shorter computer-delivered General Test.

Analytical Writing

One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task assesses clear ideas, reasons, examples, organisation and written control.

Verbal Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 18 and 23 minutes respectively.

Quantitative Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 21 and 26 minutes respectively.

Build your GRE plan from diagnostic evidence

Bring target programmes, the earliest deadline and a recent official-format diagnostic. MKS can organise an eight-week guided plan with flexible modes, recordings, app practice, books, six-month access and continued support.

Can I prepare for the GRE through self-study?

Yes, if you can follow current ETS guidance, maintain a disciplined plan, diagnose errors and obtain useful Writing feedback.

When is GRE coaching useful?

It can help with weak foundations, difficult reasoning, essay feedback, live doubts, sequencing, accountability and reviewed mocks.

Can I combine GRE coaching and self-study?

Yes. Use coaching for targeted explanation and feedback while official ETS materials and structured independent practice build transfer.

Is self-study always cheaper?

Not necessarily. Compare materials, test fees, travel, time, repeated attempts and the cost of unresolved gaps rather than only a course fee.

Does MKS guarantee a score through coaching?

No. MKS provides a structured system and support, but cannot guarantee an official score, admission or funding.
