Use technical strength without assuming readiness

GRE Preparation for Engineering Graduates in Nepal

Engineering study may support some quantitative concepts, but the GRE still requires careful translation, data reasoning, verbal evidence, writing and timed decisions.

Translate an engineering background into GRE evidence

University mathematics and technical problem solving can help, but GRE questions reward precise reading, efficient modelling and test-specific decisions rather than the complexity of the applicant’s degree.

Start with programme research. A master’s or doctoral department may require GRE scores, make them optional, decline to use them or apply different expectations by pathway and admission cycle. Check the current official programme and graduate-school pages, not an old forum or consultancy list. Record the required measures, minimum if one is published, competitive context, score-reporting instructions and earliest application or funding deadline before booking the test.

Take a balanced diagnostic. Engineering graduates sometimes move quickly through calculation while losing points on units, wording, quantitative comparison conditions, data labels or a hidden restriction. Classify mistakes rather than calling the whole Quant section strong. Use the ETS Math Review and Math Conventions to confirm the arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data-analysis foundation actually tested, then practise translating unfamiliar contexts with complete written reasoning.

Give Verbal Reasoning protected study time. Technical coursework may involve dense reading, but GRE Verbal asks for relationships among words and concepts, passage analysis, inference, evaluation and completion of sentences using context. Build vocabulary through retrieval and usage, then connect it to Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence logic. For Reading Comprehension, identify structure and evidence before judging options; do not replace reasoning practice with a large word list.

Prepare Analytical Writing as an independent measure. The Issue task requires a clear position, relevant reasons and examples, logical organisation and control of written English within the time limit. Engineering examples can be useful when they are explained for a general reader, but technical detail does not substitute for argument. Write complete timed responses, receive specific feedback and revise recurring problems in development, transitions, grammar and sentence control.

Use official simulation at defined points. POWERPREP helps students experience question types, tools, movement within sections and time management. Keep official tests unseen for a baseline and later readiness checks. Between them, assign targeted Quant translation, Verbal evidence and Writing tasks, followed by mixed sections and error retests. A mock is complete only after each unstable decision creates a correction and a fresh follow-up.

MKS Education can build an engineering-graduate plan across physical, online and hybrid classes with recordings in every mode, physical books, iOS and Android practice, eight guided weeks, six-month access and continued support. Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. The programme policy and official result remain outside MKS control; no score, admission or funding is guaranteed.

Diagnose first

Use an official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Writing errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and funding deadlines.

Verify claims

Use ETS and official university pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Programme policyGRE use varies by department and cycle.Current official requirement and deadline.
Diagnostic splitDegree background can hide uneven measures.Quant Verbal and Writing evidence separately.
Quant conceptsEngineering math may exceed but not match GRE scope.Arithmetic algebra geometry and data analysis.
Question translationSimple mathematics can be buried in wording.Variables units conditions and required output.
Quantitative ComparisonThe relationship matters more than one value.Cases constraints and sufficiency checks.
Data interpretationLabels and denominators cause avoidable errors.Graph table percentage and unit reading.
Verbal vocabularyRecognition must support sentence reasoning.Retrieval context and logical fit.
Reading evidenceTechnical confidence can encourage assumptions.Passage role inference and option proof.
Issue WritingTechnical detail needs an explicit argument.Position reasons examples and organisation.
POWERPREPOfficial software experience supports valid planning.Protected baseline and later checkpoint.
Error reviewA total score does not teach the next skill.Cause correction fresh retest and trend.
TimelineTesting must fit applications and possible retest.Work backward from the earliest official deadline.
MKS Education: MKS can use an engineering graduate’s diagnostic and programme list to balance Quant precision with Verbal reasoning, Writing feedback and official computer-based checkpoints.
Connected preparation

What makes the MKS GRE learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GRE practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official ETS resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Verify the current GRE policy on every target programme page.
  • Diagnose translation and data errors rather than assuming Quant strength.
  • Protect daily time for vocabulary, passage evidence and sentence logic.
  • Write and review complete timed Issue responses.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not equate an engineering degree with automatic GRE Quant readiness.
  • Do not postpone Verbal preparation until the final weeks.
  • Do not use technical complexity as a substitute for clear Writing reasoning.
  • Do not rely on an old university GRE-requirement list.
Current test context

Prepare for the GRE General Test students now take

ETS lists one 30-minute Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections in the shorter computer-delivered General Test.

Analytical Writing

One 30-minute Analyze an Issue task assesses clear ideas, reasons, examples, organisation and written control.

Verbal Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 18 and 23 minutes respectively.

Quantitative Reasoning

Two sections contain 12 and 15 questions with 21 and 26 minutes respectively.

Build your GRE plan from diagnostic evidence

Bring target programmes, the earliest deadline and a recent official-format diagnostic. MKS can organise an eight-week guided plan with flexible modes, recordings, app practice, books, six-month access and continued support.

Do engineering graduates need GRE preparation?

Yes. Engineering study may help some Quant concepts, but students still need a current diagnostic, test-specific translation, Verbal reasoning, Writing and timed computer practice.

Is GRE Quant easy for engineering students?

Not automatically. Wording, conditions, units, quantitative comparison and data interpretation can create errors even when the underlying mathematics is familiar.

How should engineers prepare for GRE Verbal?

Build vocabulary through retrieval, then practise sentence logic, passage structure, evidence, inference and answer-choice elimination.

Do all engineering graduate programmes require the GRE?

No. Policies vary by department and cycle. Verify each target programme’s current official admissions page before setting the test plan.

Can MKS guarantee admission after GRE preparation?

No. MKS can provide preparation and support but cannot guarantee an official score, admission, scholarship or assistantship.
