UK Student Visa Application Form: Step-by-Step Guide

The UK Student visa application is completed online. The form is adaptive, so the questions and identity route shown to one applicant may not be identical to another. Prepare your passport, CAS and evidence first, then make every answer consistent with the documents your university and UKVI will use.

Quick answer: Check that your CAS and passport details are correct, start the official GOV.UK Student visa application, create or sign in to the required account, answer each section truthfully, review the declaration, pay the application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge, then follow the instructions to prove your identity and provide supporting documents. Do not use a copied answer sheet.

Before opening the form

Item What to verify Why it matters
Passport Name, date of birth, nationality, passport number, issue and expiry dates The identity record and travel document must match
CAS Reference, sponsor, course, dates, fees, payments and qualifications listed The CAS supports the study points and many form answers
Funds Required amount, source, account holder, dates and evidence period Form answers must agree with financial evidence
TB certificate Home Office-approved clinic, identity details and validity Many applicants resident in Nepal need an accepted certificate
ATAS Whether the course requires it and whether the certificate details match Applicable sensitive subjects require approval before the visa application
History worksheet Addresses, travel, visas, refusals, study and employment dates Accurate dates reduce contradictions and omissions

You need a CAS before applying and must enter its reference number. GOV.UK says an applicant must apply within six months of receiving the CAS. For an application from outside the UK, the application cannot be made more than six months before the course start date on the CAS.

Step 1: Start only from GOV.UK

Open the Student visa guide on GOV.UK and use its “apply online” route. Check that the address begins with the official government domain before entering personal or payment information. The form lets you save progress and return later, so there is no benefit in rushing an incomplete application.

You will be told during the process how to prove your identity. Depending on nationality, passport and application circumstances, an applicant will either use the UK Immigration: ID Check app with a UKVI account or attend a visa application centre for fingerprints and a photograph. Follow the route shown in your own application.

Step 2: Enter identity details exactly

Use the name and identity details printed in the passport. Record previous names when asked. Do not silently shorten a name because another document uses a different order. If the CAS contains a material identity error, contact the university before submission so it can advise whether the CAS must be corrected.

  • Check every digit of the passport number.
  • Use the correct issuing authority, issue date and expiry date.
  • Answer nationality and additional-nationality questions fully.
  • Give accurate marital status and dependant information.
  • Use an email address and phone number that you monitor.

Step 3: Provide address and travel history

The form may ask about current and previous addresses, time lived at each address, travel to the UK and other countries, previous visas, refusals, removals or immigration problems. Create a timeline from passports, email records and previous applications. If an old date is genuinely uncertain, use the form’s available explanation route rather than inventing precision.

A previous refusal does not disappear because the passport has changed. Disclose information when asked and explain it accurately. UKVI can compare applications across time.

Step 4: Answer CAS and sponsor questions

Form area Primary source
Student sponsor name and licence CAS statement
CAS reference CAS statement
Course title and qualification level CAS and university record
Course start and end dates CAS
Tuition fee and amount paid CAS, not only a separate payment receipt
Accommodation payment recorded by sponsor CAS and current Student route rules
Qualifications used for admission CAS and listed evidence

Do not replace the formal sponsor name with an informal university abbreviation. If a recent tuition payment is missing from the CAS, ask the university whether it will update the CAS record before you rely on the payment in the form.

Step 5: Complete the financial section

State who is paying and identify the permitted source of money. Personal funds, qualifying parental funds, official financial sponsorship and qualifying student loans have different evidence. If you use a parent’s money, the application normally also needs evidence of the relationship and permission to use the funds under the applicable rules.

Do not confuse the visa application fee or IHS with the maintenance funds. Do not use a future loan, an unconfirmed scholarship or a property valuation as if it were liquid money. Use the current official financial-evidence guidance because amounts and rules can change.

Step 6: Answer security, criminality and immigration questions

Read these questions slowly. They may cover criminal convictions, civil penalties, immigration breaches, war crimes, terrorism, extremist activity and other conduct. Answer truthfully and provide details where the form requires them. A “minor” incident should not be hidden because the applicant assumes it is irrelevant.

If a question is unclear or the history is complex, obtain advice from a properly authorised UK immigration adviser. A study-abroad consultant should not invent or conceal an answer.

Step 7: Check documents and translations

The official Student visa documents page lists a current passport and CAS as core items. Depending on circumstances, applicants may also need financial evidence, ATAS, parental consent and relationship proof for applicants under 18, a TB result, sponsor consent or other evidence. Documents not in English or Welsh generally need an acceptable certified translation.

Upload only through the route provided after submission. File names should be clear, scans readable and pages complete. Optional document-scanning services do not improve the chance of approval.

Step 8: Review before declaring

  • Passport and CAS characters match exactly.
  • Course, fees, payments and dates agree with the CAS.
  • Address, study, work and travel timelines do not overlap incorrectly.
  • All previous visa refusals and immigration issues requested by the form are disclosed.
  • Funding source and evidence tell the same story.
  • TB and ATAS details apply to the correct person and course.
  • Every uploaded document is legible and complete.
  • The email address is accessible and secure.

Save or print the final submitted form, document checklist, payment confirmations and reference numbers. After submission, if something needs to change, GOV.UK instructs applicants to contact UKVI. Do not create a second application casually, as fees and processing may be affected.

Step 9: Pay and prove your identity

The online journey collects the visa application fee and, where required, the IHS. Each dependant makes a separate application and pays separately. The system will then tell the applicant whether to use the identity-check app or book a visa application centre appointment.

If an appointment is required, take the passport and follow the appointment confirmation. Provide biometrics and documents as instructed. GOV.UK says an outside-UK Student visa decision is usually made within three weeks, although verification, interview or personal circumstances can make a case take longer. Faster services may be offered, but availability is not guaranteed.

After a decision

If successful, current GOV.UK guidance says the applicant receives an eVisa, a digital record of identity and immigration status. The decision message explains how to access it through a UKVI account. Link the passport that will be used for travel and check the status details before departure. If refused, read the decision carefully for the reasons and any administrative-review right.

Common form mistakes

  • Copying answers from another applicant.
  • Using an agent’s email and losing direct access to UKVI messages.
  • Entering a university marketing name instead of the CAS sponsor details.
  • Guessing travel dates without checking old passports.
  • Hiding a previous refusal or changed name.
  • Submitting before a CAS payment update is resolved.
  • Mixing visa fees with the required financial evidence.
  • Uploading unreadable bank statements or incomplete translations.
