Why scholarship stacking rules differ

A university may want to distribute limited fee discounts among more students, prevent a fee account from receiving more support than the tuition charged, or distinguish self-funded applicants from sponsored students. An external funder may prohibit double payment for the same expense or require its award to be the applicant’s only public sponsorship.

The word “scholarship” can describe very different benefits. One award may reduce tuition, another may pay a maintenance stipend, and a third may reimburse travel. Two providers may allow complementary costs but prohibit overlapping tuition support. Always ask what each award is intended to cover.

Current official examples show different rules

UCL: combination may depend on total funding

For 2026/27, UCL’s Global Master’s Scholarship page states that the award may be held alongside other scholarships, studentships, awards or bursaries depending on the total value of other funds received. Recipients must immediately inform the UCL Student Funding Office about other funding for the degree. The scholarship is first applied to tuition, with any permitted remainder paid in instalments towards maintenance. This is not a general rule for every UCL award; it is an example from one scheme’s terms.

University of Glasgow: some discounts do not combine

The University of Glasgow’s 2026 World Changers Global Excellence Scholarship states that university discounts and scholarships cannot be combined with one another or external sponsorship discounts, except for the stated Alumni Discount exception. If a student receives more than one applicable scholarship, the lower-value award is removed. Other Glasgow schemes have their own pages, so check the exact award rather than relying on this example for all funding.

Imperial Business School: a larger award can replace a smaller one

Imperial Business School’s full-time MBA funding page says that when a student is offered a larger Business School award after a smaller one, the larger award supersedes the first rather than being added. It also says that a student whose other scholarship pays the full tuition fee directly to Imperial cannot also receive a Business School scholarship.

Chevening: disclose additional funding

Chevening’s current FAQ says scholars are not usually permitted to have more than one sponsor and should send details of additional funding to their programme officer, including amounts and intended purpose. Depending on the amount, Chevening funding may be reduced. Chevening financial guidance also says scholars should not normally accept additional funding for purposes already covered and must disclose other scholarships or awards. Apply the current terms for your award year, not an old summary.

How to obtain permission step by step

1. Read the two complete terms. Search for other funding, concurrent awards, double funding, sponsorship, self-funded, fee discount, income, disclosure and overpayment.
2. Identify coverage. List exactly how much goes to tuition, living costs, travel, research or another purpose.
3. Calculate the combined total. Compare it with tuition and the full cost of study. Note any excess above the cost a provider intends to fund.
4. Write to both providers. Give the official name, value, duration, coverage and payment route of the other award. Attach the offer or terms if requested.
5. Ask precise questions. Can both be accepted? Will either value be reduced? Can any tuition remainder be paid as maintenance? Which award appears first on the fee account?
6. Wait for written confirmation. A verbal comment from an adviser is not enough for a decision that may affect thousands of pounds.
7. Notify providers of changes. A new award, revised value or employer contribution can change permission.
8. Check the final university account and CAS. Confirm that fees paid and official sponsorship are recorded accurately for the visa application.

Keep the message factual. Do not describe a pending application as a confirmed award. Send it through the official scholarship office, funder contact or applicant portal.

Visa and financial-evidence implications

A scholarship does not automatically solve every Student visa financial requirement. The relevant sponsorship must be evidenced in a form accepted by UKVI, and the university must accurately record applicable course-fee payments or sponsorship on the CAS where required. A pending scholarship is not confirmed money. Use the live UKVI Student visa guidance and your university’s international student advisers for the exact evidence needed.

If an award is reduced after another scholarship is accepted, recalculate the tuition balance and living-cost plan before the visa application. Also check payment timing: a grant paid after arrival may not help with a pre-enrolment tuition deposit.

Red flags and common mistakes

• Adding two advertised values without reading either set of terms.
• Assuming “you may apply for multiple scholarships” means “you may hold all of them”.
• Failing to disclose a pending or confirmed award when the form asks.
• Calling a family contribution a scholarship or an unconfirmed discount a sponsor.
