September vs January Intake in UK for Nepali Students 2026
The better intake is the one that offers the right course and enough time to prepare a credible, affordable application. September usually has the broadest academic cycle, while January can be useful for selected courses—but availability belongs to each university.
Quick answer: Choose September when it provides the strongest course and scholarship fit and your documents are ready. Choose January when the exact course is officially open and the extra preparation time improves the application. Do not select an intake only because it appears faster or because an agent says admission is easier.
Main comparison
| Factor | September | January |
|---|---|---|
| Course availability | Often the main annual start, but check the course | Selected programmes; verify exact campus and modules |
| Application planning | Longer established cycle with course-specific deadlines | Shorter range for some programmes and CAS cut-offs |
| Scholarships | Many schemes align to the main academic year | Some awards exist but may differ or be unavailable |
| Accommodation | High demand around the main arrival period | Availability can differ; contract dates still matter |
| Graduation timing | Depends on course length and calendar | Different finish date; check progression and plans |
Course availability comes first
Compare the official course pages for both starts. A January version may not have the same optional modules, placement calendar or campus as September. Confirm whether the degree award, course length and tuition are identical.
Academic readiness
Choose a start date that allows final certificates, English evidence, references, portfolio or test preparation to be completed honestly. A later intake is sensible only if it improves readiness and still supports the academic plan.
Scholarship and budget check
Search the university’s scholarship page by nationality, level, course and intake. Some awards require a separate application before an offer deadline. Build the budget without assuming a scholarship, then treat confirmed funding as an improvement.
CAS and visa timing
Work backwards from the university’s CAS deadline and latest arrival date. Include offer conditions, deposit, pre-CAS checks, ATAS where required, financial evidence, TB testing, visa submission and travel. Do not rely on last year’s timeline.
Decision checklist
- Exact course and campus are open.
- Modules and accreditation fit the goal.
- Entry conditions can be met before the CAS cut-off.
- Total fee and living budget are realistic.
- Scholarship eligibility is verified for that intake.
- Accommodation contract dates fit the course.
- Visa and travel preparation have a contingency buffer.
Frequently asked questions

Can I defer from September to January?
Only if the university approves deferral and the course has that start. Scholarship, deposit, offer and CAS terms may need to be reassessed.
