NHS and Healthcare Guide for Nepali Students in UK 2026
Paying the immigration health surcharge can provide access to relevant NHS services during valid immigration permission, but it does not make every health, dental, optical or prescription cost free. Learn the system before you need care.
Quick answer: Register with a local GP soon after moving, keep medicine and vaccination information, learn NHS 111 and emergency 999 use, and check charges for prescriptions, dentistry, eye care and services outside NHS coverage.
Register with a GP
NHS guidance advises students who live mainly at their university address to register with a GP near the university as soon as possible, especially with an ongoing condition. In England, everyone can register with a GP surgery for free; the NHS page says ID, proof of address and immigration status are not required simply to register, although extra details may be requested for records.
What a GP does
A GP is the usual first point for non-emergency physical or mental-health concerns, ongoing conditions, referrals and prescriptions. University health centres can be convenient, but students can compare local practices and registration areas.
Urgent and emergency help
- 999: life-threatening emergency.
- 111: urgent medical help when it is not a 999 emergency, using the current local service.
- GP or pharmacy: routine or minor health needs as appropriate.
- University support: wellbeing, counselling or disability services according to the institution.
Service structures differ across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland; use the national NHS service for the country where you live.
Prescriptions, dental and eye care
Charges and eligibility vary by UK nation and personal circumstances. NHS GP registration does not mean all prescriptions, dental treatment, glasses or contact lenses are free. Check the current national rules and any low-income support for which you may qualify.
Before leaving Nepal
- Obtain a concise medical summary for ongoing conditions.
- Carry medicines legally in original packaging.
- Bring prescription and generic medicine names.
- Check vaccination and university course requirements.
- Arrange appropriate travel cover for the journey and gaps.
Insurance limits
The immigration health surcharge and NHS access do not replace travel insurance, contents insurance or cover for every private, dental, optical, repatriation or pre-existing-condition expense. Read any policy exclusions.
Mental health and disability support
Contact the university before arrival if adjustments, accessible accommodation or continuity of care are needed. Register with a GP early and keep emergency plans. Asking for support does not reduce academic credibility.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an NHS number before registering?
NHS England says an NHS number can help find records but is not required to register with a GP.
Is GP registration paid?
Registration itself is free in England. Other services or items may carry charges.
How can MKS Education help?
