ATAS Certificate for UK Study from Nepal 2026 Guide

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme applies to certain foreign students and researchers in specified sensitive technology-related subjects. It is course- and nationality-dependent, so the university’s offer information and the current GOV.UK guidance must be checked together.

Quick answer: If your UK institution says your course requires ATAS, obtain the valid certificate before the relevant study or visa step. The university normally provides the CAH3 subject code. The official application is online and has no application fee.

Who may need ATAS?

GOV.UK states that ATAS can apply to taught or research study at master’s or PhD level in specified subjects, and to some undergraduate courses with an integrated master’s year. A new certificate can be required when the institution, course content, research scope or other specified details change. Avoid duplicate applications unless official guidance permits the situation.

ATAS and the Student visa

Where ATAS is required for a Student visa application, the certificate is part of the evidence. An ATAS certificate is not admission, a CAS or a visa, and it does not replace any of those decisions.
