MS Structural Engineering vs Transportation Engineering vs Geotechnical Engineering in USA for Nepali Civil Engineers 2026–2027

Compare three civil-engineering specialisations through mechanics, data, field investigation, design responsibility and programme-level accreditation evidence.

Quick answer

Choose the infrastructure problem you want to solve

Structural engineering focuses on how buildings, bridges and other systems resist loads safely. Transportation engineering focuses on mobility, traffic, planning and the performance of transport networks. Geotechnical engineering focuses on soil, foundations, slopes and earth-supported structures.

All three build on civil engineering, but their mathematics, laboratory work, software and design evidence differ. Select the programme whose required courses and projects match your technical preparation.

Programme fit

Civil specialisations compared

PathTechnical centrePreparation to demonstrateTypical graduate work
MS Structural EngineeringLoad paths, analysis, materials, design and structural performanceMechanics, structural analysis, concrete, steel, dynamics and numerical methodsAdvanced analysis, earthquake engineering, finite elements, reliability and design
MS Transportation EngineeringMovement of people and goods through networks and facilitiesTransportation, statistics, surveying, GIS, programming or traffic analysisTraffic flow, planning, safety, pavement, modelling, transit and intelligent systems
MS Geotechnical EngineeringSoil and rock behaviour, foundations and earth-supported systemsSoil mechanics, geology, foundations, fluids and laboratory or field methodsFoundations, slopes, earthquake geotechnics, ground improvement and geoenvironmental work

A general MS Civil Engineering may contain any of these concentrations. Confirm which courses actually appear on the transcript and how the university identifies the degree.

Curriculum audit

Compare theory, design and field evidence

Structural programmes can range from computation and mechanics to code-based design and hazard engineering. Transportation programmes may be planning-oriented, data-oriented or infrastructure-oriented. Geotechnical programmes may emphasise laboratory behaviour, foundation design, field investigation, numerical modelling or environmental containment.

Check the mathematics and computing level, required laboratories, design studios, thesis or capstone, professional software and access to field data. A list of software logos is not enough; look for courses and projects showing how tools are used to make and defend engineering decisions.

Admission fit

Build a technical evidence matrix

Map your Nepal transcript across calculus, differential equations, probability, statistics, mechanics, structural analysis, reinforced concrete, steel, transportation, surveying, GIS, soil mechanics, foundations, hydraulics and programming. Add final-year project scope, design responsibilities, laboratory tests and internships.

A strong portfolio describes the problem, assumptions, codes or standards used, analysis method, verification and result. Remove confidential client data and never present team work as individual work. Applicants changing specialisation should explain the gap honestly and identify prerequisite or bridge courses.

GRE and English-test rules vary by department. Verify the exact intake, minimums and waiver conditions. If the GRE is required or helpful, prepare quantitative reasoning carefully; if it is not used, strengthen transcript, design, research and recommendation evidence.

Classification and accreditation

Verify CIP and ABET at the exact level

NCES distinguishes Structural Engineering (14.0803), Transportation and Highway Engineering (14.0804) and Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering (14.0802). Universities may classify a concentration under general Civil Engineering instead, so the marketing title does not establish the programme code.

For STEM OPT planning, confirm the code assigned by the university and shown on the Form I-20, then use current DHS information. For accreditation, ABET explains that it accredits specific degree-granting programmes and that engineering accreditation can include bachelor’s and master’s levels. Search the exact programme, campus and level; do not extend an undergraduate accreditation to a graduate specialisation.

Professional pathway

Separate education from engineering licensure

An MS can deepen technical competence, but professional-engineer licensure is governed by US jurisdictions and depends on education, examinations and experience rules. Do not assume that a degree title alone satisfies every state’s pathway. If licensure matters, check the current state board and how it evaluates international education.

For a Nepal-facing plan, choose a concrete problem such as seismic resilience, road safety, urban mobility, slope stability or foundation performance. Explain the methods needed and how the selected programme closes a real skill gap without promising a job or regulated status.

Research and funding

Evaluate laboratories, data and assistantships

Structural applicants should inspect testing facilities and computation; transportation applicants should inspect datasets, simulators, field partnerships and GIS access; geotechnical applicants should inspect soil laboratories, centrifuge or field-testing resources where relevant. For thesis routes, match recent faculty work rather than broad department themes.

Assistantship availability can depend on grants, teaching needs and communication skills. Distinguish guaranteed awards from competitive opportunities and calculate the full cost when funding is uncertain.

FAQ

Structural, transportation and geotechnical engineering FAQs

Which specialisation is best after BE Civil Engineering in Nepal?

Structural engineering suits building and infrastructure analysis and design; transportation engineering suits mobility, traffic and transport systems; geotechnical engineering suits soil, foundations and earth-supported structures. Choose from prerequisite strength and intended technical work.

Can I apply without professional civil-engineering experience?

Many programmes accept academically prepared applicants without extensive employment, but requirements vary. Strong design courses, laboratory work, software evidence and a relevant final-year project can help demonstrate readiness.

Is GRE required for these civil-engineering specialisations?

Policies differ by university and intake. Some require or consider the GRE, while others are optional or do not use it. Check the exact department page before preparing or sending a score.

Are these programmes STEM-designated?

Engineering programmes commonly use STEM-related CIP codes, but only the code assigned to the exact degree and shown on the Form I-20 should be used for STEM analysis.

Does ABET accreditation apply automatically to a master’s specialisation?

No. ABET accreditation applies to an exact listed programme, campus and degree level. An accredited bachelor’s programme does not automatically make every graduate specialisation accredited.

How can MKS Education help Nepali civil engineers?

MKS Education can help align the programme shortlist, GRE preparation where relevant, English-test preparation and application evidence. Applicants must verify current technical and admission requirements directly with each university.
