MS Geology vs Geophysics vs GIS in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027
Compare the scientific focus, prerequisites, research style and professional direction of geology, geophysics and GIS before choosing a US graduate programme from Nepal.
Choose by the work you want to do
Choose geology for Earth materials, geologic history, field mapping and physical processes; geophysics for a physics-, mathematics- and computation-heavy investigation of the Earth; and GIS for cartography, spatial analysis, remote sensing and geographic data systems.
The three fields can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A convincing application connects previous coursework, a specific skill gap, suitable faculty or facilities and a credible Nepal-related or international objective.
Geology, geophysics and GIS compared
| Path | Central question | Typical preparation | Common graduate work |
|---|---|---|---|
| MS Geology | How did Earth materials, structures and processes develop? | Geology, Earth science, chemistry and field or laboratory experience | Mineralogy, sedimentology, structural geology, hydrogeology, mapping and thesis research |
| MS Geophysics | What can physical measurements reveal about the Earth? | Physics, calculus, differential equations, programming and Earth science | Seismology, gravity, magnetics, signal processing, modelling and inversion |
| MS GIS | How can location-based data explain and support decisions? | Geography, environmental science, engineering, planning, statistics or computing | Cartography, spatial databases, remote sensing, geodesy, web GIS and spatial analysis |
These are broad patterns, not universal curricula. Read the actual degree plan, course catalogue, prerequisite page and recent student projects.
Look beyond the programme name
Start with required courses. A geology degree may be field- and laboratory-intensive, while another with the same title may concentrate on water, hazards, energy or geochemistry. Geophysics can range from solid-Earth theory to exploration methods and computational imaging. GIS can sit in geography, engineering, environmental science or an information school, changing both prerequisites and electives.
Check whether the programme requires a thesis, capstone, internship, field camp or qualifying examination. For a thesis route, read faculty research pages and recent publications. A generic email asking for “any scholarship” is weaker than a short message that identifies one research connection and shows relevant preparation.
Map your Nepal transcript to prerequisites
Create a prerequisite matrix before paying an application fee. List your completed geology, physics, calculus, statistics, programming, surveying, remote-sensing and research-methods courses. Beside each target programme, record missing prerequisites and whether conditional admission is possible.
Applicants moving from geology into geophysics should demonstrate quantitative readiness. Applicants moving into GIS should show evidence such as spatial analysis, Python or R, remote-sensing work, a map portfolio or a data project. A statement of purpose should explain the transition through evidence rather than simply calling the new field “interesting.”
GRE requirements and English-language policies vary. Use the current programme page for the exact intake. If a GRE score is required or strategically useful, build a deliberate quantitative and verbal plan; never assume a test-optional programme will ignore the rest of the academic profile.
CIP code and STEM eligibility require exact verification
US federal classifications distinguish Geology/Earth Science (CIP 40.0601), Geophysics and Seismology (40.0603), and Geographic Information Science and Cartography (45.0702). Those definitions help applicants understand scope, but a university chooses the CIP code assigned to its exact programme.
For F-1 practical-training planning, verify the programme’s CIP code with the university and later on the Form I-20. Do not infer STEM eligibility from words such as science, technology or geospatial. The current DHS list and the student’s immigration record control the analysis.
Use a problem-and-skill narrative
Nepal offers credible contexts for all three pathways: terrain and hazard questions, groundwater and infrastructure, resource mapping, urban planning and environmental monitoring. Use these as a focused context, not as a promise of a particular job. Explain the problem, the skill you lack, the programme component that develops it and how you expect to apply that capability.
Compare access to laboratories, field sites, computing resources, licensed software, geospatial data, career support and employer-facing projects. For research degrees, funding may depend more on faculty grants and assistantships than on a general scholarship page, so assess each department separately.

Geology, geophysics and GIS FAQs
Which degree is best after BSc Geology in Nepal?
MS Geology is the closest continuation for students who want deeper work in Earth materials, stratigraphy, field methods or geologic processes. Geophysics can fit applicants with strong physics, mathematics and computation, while GIS may suit those who want spatial data, mapping and remote-sensing applications.
Can a Nepali engineering graduate apply for geophysics or GIS?
Possibly. Universities set their own prerequisite rules. Geophysics may expect calculus, physics and programming, while GIS programmes may accept applicants from geography, engineering, environmental science, planning or related fields. Compare your transcript with the exact prerequisite list.
Is GRE required for geology, geophysics or GIS programmes in the USA?
The policy varies by university and programme. Some require the GRE, some make it optional and others do not use it. Check the current department page for the exact intake before preparing or sending a score.
Are these programmes STEM-designated?
Many programmes may use STEM-related CIP codes, but the programme name alone does not decide eligibility. Confirm the exact CIP code printed on the Form I-20 and compare it with the current DHS STEM list.
Should I choose a thesis or non-thesis route?
A thesis route can be useful for research, field investigation and future doctoral study. A professional or non-thesis route may emphasise applied coursework and projects. Compare faculty fit, funding, field costs, capstone requirements and career goals.
How can MKS Education help with this decision?
MKS Education can help Nepali students organise a programme shortlist, test plan, English-language preparation and application timeline. Final admission and visa decisions remain with the university and the relevant US authorities.
