Canada Study Permit Extension Guide for Nepali Students 2027
A deadline-led guide for Nepali students who need more time to complete studies or continue at a Canadian institution.
Read the permit and build a 90-day preparation window
The printed expiry date determines when study authorization ends unless another rule shortens it.
The study permit expiry date appears under additional information. IRCC explains that it is often the program length plus 90 days, but the printed document controls. The extra period is intended to prepare to leave or extend status. Put the expiry date in a shared calendar and start document collection several months earlier.
If continuing at the same school, IRCC says to apply at least 30 days before expiry. Thirty days should be treated as a minimum planning point, not the ideal day to start. A passport expiring soon can limit the new permit because IRCC cannot extend the study permit beyond passport validity.
Program completion can shorten validity. A permit generally becomes invalid 90 days after the school first notifies the student of completion even if a later date is printed. Students finishing early should distinguish the completion-notification date from graduation ceremony and transcript dates.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Permit date | Printed expiry and conditions | Permit copy |
| Application target | At least 30 days before expiry | Calendar plan |
| Passport | Validity beyond requested extension | Renewed passport |
| Program completion | First completion notice date | School email or transcript |
Show continuing enrolment funds and a credible reason
The application should explain why more authorized study time is needed.
Use the current IRCC online questionnaire and form. Include the DLI enrolment letter, updated program end date, transcript and evidence of progress. If completion is delayed by failed courses, placement scheduling, medical leave or a thesis timeline, explain the facts and provide school evidence rather than hiding the delay.
Provide financial evidence for the remaining tuition and living period under the current checklist. Separate confirmed scholarship or assistantship funding from expected work income. An extension application is not strengthened by an unrealistic budget that assumes future off-campus shifts will pay all essential costs.
Upload the passport identity pages, current permit and any biometrics or medical documents requested. Use the newest IMM 5709 requirements where applicable and keep a PDF of every answer. Information should match previous applications; explain any corrected error openly.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Enrolment | Current status and new end date | DLI letter |
| Progress | Reason more time is needed | Transcript and explanation |
| Finances | Remaining tuition and living needs | Bank award and sponsor proof |
| Forms | Current online answers and documents | Submission copy |
Know what a timely in-Canada application permits
Submitting before expiry can preserve status but not create new rights.
A student who applies to extend before the current permit expires may continue studying under the same conditions while IRCC decides, provided the person remains in Canada and otherwise qualifies. Keep the online submission timestamp and fee receipt as evidence for the DLI or employer.
Work remains subject to the existing permit and the current on-campus or off-campus eligibility rules. An extension submission does not authorize work if the student was not eligible before, is on unauthorized leave or has stopped actively pursuing studies. Track work hours and enrolment throughout processing.
Leaving Canada can affect maintained-status practical rights and re-entry. A permit is not a travel document, and a visitor visa or eTA may also be needed. Check IRCC guidance before travel and do not assume the extension receipt guarantees entry or permission to resume work immediately.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Submission timing | Received before expiry | Account receipt |
| Study | Same conditions while eligible | Enrolment record |
| Work | Existing conditions and current eligibility | Permit and hour log |
| Travel | Re-entry document and status effect | IRCC advice and visa |
Use the correct route for a new DLI deferral or expired permit
An ordinary same-school extension is not suitable for every situation.
Changing to another post-secondary DLI requires following the current school-change process and usually applying to extend the permit for the new DLI. IRCC now provides a specific faster-processing possibility for eligible students changing schools. Include the new LOA and any required PAL or TAL evidence.
If enrolment has been deferred, check whether the student can remain in Canada and whether the 150-day or next-semester rule applies. An updated LOA and documented DLI approval are important. Do not continue working through a deferral merely because an extension was filed.
If the permit has already expired without a timely extension, the student may need restoration rather than a normal extension and generally must stop studying until status and the new permit are restored. Act immediately because the regular restoration window is limited and approval is not guaranteed.
| Decision stage | What to verify | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| New DLI | Extension and school-change route | New LOA and application |
| Deferral | Authorized period and next start | Updated LOA |
| Expired permit | Restoration eligibility | Expiry calculation |
| Decision | Approval conditions and new dates | New permit |
Keep a dated evidence file before submission
A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.
When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Frequently asked questions
Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.
When should I extend my Canadian study permit?
IRCC says a student continuing at the same school must apply at least 30 days before the permit expires. Starting earlier is safer because passport renewal school letters and financial documents take time. The valid application must be received before expiry to support maintained status.
Can I keep studying while my extension is processed?
A student who applies before expiry may generally continue studying under the same conditions while IRCC decides provided the person remains in Canada and continues meeting the conditions. Keep the submission receipt and maintain enrolment and academic progress.
Can I work while waiting for a study permit extension?
Only if the student continues to meet the existing work conditions. Filing an extension does not create work authorization. Enrolment active-study status regular-term hour limits and any leave or deferral must still comply with IRCC requirements.
What if my passport expires before the requested extension date?
IRCC cannot extend a study permit beyond passport validity. Renew the passport early where possible and follow the current application instructions. A short passport can lead to a shorter permit and another extension process.
How does MKS Education support extension planning?
MKS can organise enrolment academic funding and deadline evidence and help the student check consistency with the education plan. Immigration eligibility and maintained status should be confirmed through IRCC or authorised advice and no approval is guaranteed.
