Canada PGWP Language Requirements for Nepali Graduates 2027

A credential-specific guide to the English or French evidence now required for many post-graduation work permit applications.

Fact-checked: 31 July 2026Official-source workflowNepal-specific planning
Important: Admission-language scores and PGWP-language evidence are separate requirements. Check the live IRCC table for the credential and application date.
Identify the threshold

Match the credential to CLB or NCLC 7 or 5

The institution name does not determine the language level by itself.

IRCC’s PGWP eligibility page separates bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, other university programs and college, polytechnic or non-university programs. Degree and other university graduates generally need a minimum CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Graduates of other college, polytechnic or non-university programs generally need CLB or NCLC 5 in all four abilities. A college delivering a degree and a university delivering a non-degree credential can make labels confusing. Use the formal credential, program and IRCC category rather than the school’s brand.

Applicants who submitted the PGWP application before November 1 2024 and certain flight-school graduates can fall under different treatment. Do not apply an old exemption to a 2027 application. Record the study-permit date, PGWP application date and credential type before selecting a test target.

Choose an accepted test

Use current IRCC-approved English or French evidence

A university-accepted admission test is not automatically accepted for PGWP.

Check IRCC’s current PGWP language-test page before booking. The applicant must use an approved test and submit results covering all four abilities. Do not substitute an institution’s English-medium letter, internal placement test or admission waiver unless IRCC explicitly lists it for the PGWP route.

Convert the test scores to CLB or NCLC using IRCC’s official equivalency table. Overall bands or averages do not replace the minimum in each skill. One weak reading, writing, listening or speaking result can fail the threshold even when the total appears strong.

Plan the exam early enough for results and a retake before the PGWP deadline. Test availability in Canada and result-release timing vary. Keep the electronic result, test identification and any verification number requested in the application.

Watch validity

Submit results that remain valid on the application date

An expired result cannot be repaired after the deadline by explanation alone.

IRCC requires language-test results to be valid when the PGWP application is submitted. Check the validity period stated by IRCC and the testing body. Work backwards from the anticipated program-completion letter and the PGWP submission deadline when scheduling the test.

Program completion timing can change because final grades, a thesis deposit or a placement result arrives later than expected. Avoid taking the test so early that it expires before submission. At the same time, do not wait until after completion when test seats or a retake could consume the limited application window.

Names and identification on the test record should match the passport and application. Explain legitimate spelling differences and preserve the passport used on test day. Do not edit a score report or upload a screenshot that omits the verification details.

Connect language evidence with the full PGWP file

Meeting the score does not replace the other eligibility documents.

Upload the language result in the field and format instructed by IRCC. The PGWP file also needs proof of program completion, full-time enrolment and program duration and may need proof of an eligible field of study. Keep the final submission copy and payment receipts.

If a disability prevents assessment of one or more abilities, IRCC publishes a language-averaging process and documentation expectations. Follow that process exactly and include the explanation and tool output in the client-information section. Do not simply omit a required skill score.

A strong language result does not guarantee PGWP approval. DLI and program eligibility, full-time status, application timing, physical location and other requirements remain relevant. Review the whole eligibility page before paying the fees or beginning work after graduation.

Keep a dated evidence file before submission

A search result or counselling note can become outdated between shortlisting and application. Create one folder containing the official pages relied on, the date each page was checked, written answers from the institution, the final fee and refund terms, and the exact application files submitted.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.

This evidence trail also improves counselling quality. The student and family can see which facts are confirmed, which are estimates and which remain conditional. MKS Education uses this approach to support transparent education planning while leaving admission and immigration decisions with the relevant institutions and Canadian authorities.

Frequently asked questions

Detailed answers provide decision context and the Rank Math block supplies matching FAQPage structured data.

What language level is required for a PGWP after a Canadian degree?

Bachelor’s master’s and doctoral graduates subject to the current rule generally need CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four abilities. Check the current IRCC table and any transition rule for the application date.

What language level applies after a Canadian college diploma?

Graduates of college polytechnic or other non-university programs subject to the current rule generally need CLB or NCLC 5 in reading writing listening and speaking. The formal credential category should be confirmed rather than inferred from the school name.

Can I use my university admission IELTS result for PGWP?

Only if the test type is currently accepted by IRCC for PGWP and the result remains valid on the application date and meets the required score in all four abilities. An admission waiver or internal school test is not automatically acceptable.

Does an overall language score meet the PGWP requirement?

The threshold applies to each of reading writing listening and speaking. A high overall or average score does not compensate for an ability below the required CLB or NCLC level. Use the official conversion table.

Can MKS Education help with PGWP language planning?

MKS can help identify the education credential plan an IELTS or other preparation timeline and organise the test evidence. PGWP eligibility is determined by IRCC and case-specific immigration advice should come from an authorised professional. No result or permit is guaranteed.
