Canada PGWP Field of Study and CIP Code Guide for Nepali Students 2027

IRCC says the field-of-study requirement does not apply to graduates with a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree, PGWP-eligible flight-school graduates, people who applied for a study permit before November 1 2024 and people who submitted a PGWP application before that date. Evidence should match the exact exemption claimed.

Graduates of other university programs and college, polytechnic or non-university programs can need an eligible field when the study-permit application was submitted on or after November 1 2024. Do not assume that studying at a university removes the rule if the credential is a certificate or diploma.

Record the original study-permit submission date, not only the approval or arrival date. If the student changed programs or extended a permit, check how IRCC applies the rule to the history. Obtain authorised advice when multiple applications or credentials make the transition rule unclear.

CIP means Classification of Instructional Programs. IRCC uses six-digit CIP Canada 2021 codes to classify programs for this requirement. Ask the registrar or international office for the exact code assigned to the program and campus and request the response in writing.

Similar titles can carry different codes because curriculum emphasis differs. A data analytics program may be coded under computing, business or another area. Do not choose the nearest keyword from the IRCC list by yourself or rely on a consultant-created code that the institution has not confirmed.

Compare the confirmed six-digit code with IRCC’s current searchable eligible list. Save the result, date, program page and school confirmation. A broad two-digit category or occupational title is not enough for the evidence file.

IRCC announced that for 2026 it would not add or remove fields from the eligible field-of-study list. The freeze offers temporary stability during that calendar year but does not promise that the list will remain unchanged in 2027. Refresh the page at shortlisting, study-permit submission and PGWP submission.

IRCC explains that a code may be eligible based on when the study-permit application was submitted even if the current list differs. The online table can show different eligibility dates. Preserve evidence of the program code and the list version relevant to the applicant’s date.

A future list change should not be interpreted from news headlines alone. Read the official transition instructions and identify whether the controlling event is the study-permit application, PGWP application or another date. Seek authorised advice where the program changed after arrival.

The PGWP document page says affected graduates must provide proof that the program meets the eligible field description. Due to system limitations, IRCC instructs applicants to upload field-of-study proof in the client-information section. Follow the current instruction rather than placing it in an unrelated field.

A useful evidence set can include the institution’s CIP confirmation, official program description, transcript, completion letter and a copy of the IRCC eligible-code result. Use a short index explaining the documents without changing or embellishing the institution’s wording.

Field eligibility is only one part of PGWP. The applicant must also meet general program, DLI, full-time status, language, timing and location requirements. Do not market a course as “PGWP guaranteed” because the code appears on a list.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
