Restore Student Status in Canada for Nepali Students 2027

IRCC states that a person whose study permit already expired may need to restore student status and obtain a new permit. The regular route requires applying within 90 days of losing status. Calculate the date from the controlling permit or status document and account for the online system’s use of Coordinated Universal Time.

Eligibility also depends on having met the requirements for the stay and the conditions of the expired permit, apart from the issue leading to loss of status. Unauthorized work, an unapproved DLI change or other non-compliance can complicate the assessment. Do not assume payment of a restoration fee guarantees eligibility.

If more than 90 days have passed, IRCC generally says the person must leave Canada and apply from outside. Narrow public policies may create special measures for defined groups such as people directly affected by qualifying Canadian natural disasters, but an applicant should claim one only with exact official evidence.

IRCC’s student guidance says a person whose permit expired cannot continue studies until student status is restored and the permit is extended. Tell the DLI immediately and obtain a letter explaining the approved pause, enrolment implications and intended return. Continuing classes can add a new compliance problem.

Work authorization also ends when the relevant status and conditions are lost. Stop on-campus, off-campus, self-employed and placement work and inform the employer. Keep the final timesheet and notice. An application receipt does not normally authorize work during restoration processing.

The person may remain in Canada while IRCC decides a timely restoration application, but there is no guarantee of approval. Maintain valid contact details and monitor the online account. If refused, follow the decision instructions and obtain authorised advice about departure.

IRCC instructs a student seeking to continue to select both the study-permit application or extension and restoration of temporary resident status as a student. Use the current online questionnaire and form. Pay the restoration and study-permit fees shown on the live fee page and save each receipt.

Explain all facts and circumstances that caused the missed deadline. Use dates and documents rather than excuses. Include the current LOA or enrolment letter, transcript, funding evidence, passport, expired permit and proof supporting illness, technical error or another explanation when relevant.

Check biometrics and medical requirements. Every family member who lost status needs a separate restoration application and fee; there is no family restoration rate. Coordinate the applications so forms and histories remain consistent, but do not merge evidence that belongs to different people.

If approved, read the new permit’s validity, DLI and work conditions before resuming classes or employment. Obtain a DLI return letter and new timetable. Work should restart only when all on-campus or off-campus requirements are again met, not simply on the date the online account changes.

Ask how the interruption appears on the transcript and enrolment record and how it could affect PGWP eligibility. A restoration approval does not automatically remove a period of part-time study, unauthorized leave or unauthorized work from later assessment. Create 180-day, 120-day, 90-day and 60-day expiry reminders and keep the passport valid beyond the study timeline. Assign responsibility to the student rather than an agent. A consultant can support a checklist, but the permit holder remains responsible for status.

When a policy changes, compare the new instruction with the student’s application date, credential, institution, campus and personal status before deciding what applies. Do not silently replace an old document or reinterpret a rule from a headline. If the effect is uncertain, pause payment or submission and obtain clarification from the responsible authority or a properly authorised professional.
