A dependable word-problem method turns unfamiliar stories into a small set of precise quantitative relationships

The vocabulary changes from question to question, but the reasoning process can remain stable.

Anchor preparation to the current Quant section: 21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes, with no calculator. Official sample questions include rate and earnings contexts, illustrating that the exam presents arithmetic and algebra through situations rather than a list of formulas. The tested decision is not whether a candidate has seen the exact story before. It is whether the candidate can extract the relevant quantities, connect them logically, choose an efficient solution and reject answers that violate the stated conditions.

Use a translation checklist. First underline the precise target and note whether it asks for a value, difference, ratio, percentage, time or rate. Next label every known quantity with units. Define unknowns only after the target is clear, and write each condition separately. Ask which relationship connects the target to the known quantities. Before solving, estimate direction and magnitude. This prevents a correct calculation from answering the wrong question, using kilometres with hours incorrectly or applying a percentage to the wrong base.

For motion, use distance equals rate multiplied by time and keep each traveller’s interval clear. A delayed start means the times are different even when the meeting time is shared. For work, convert each worker into a fraction of one job per unit of time and add rates when they work together; do not add completion times. For flow, production and consumption, use the same rate logic with signed inflow or outflow. A compact table with entity, rate, time and amount makes hidden relationships visible.

For mixtures and percentages, define the whole and the component. The quantity of a substance equals concentration multiplied by total amount, while a percentage change uses the original base unless the wording states otherwise. For ratios and proportions, preserve the order of terms and scale every connected part consistently. For averages, use total divided by count instead of averaging averages blindly. These are not separate tricks; each is a disciplined way to express how quantities relate.

Choose a solution method after building the relationship. Direct algebra is useful when variables connect cleanly. Back-solving can be efficient when choices are numerical and ordered. Plugging in valid values can simplify ratios or percentages when the problem permits it. Approximation can save time when answer choices are far apart, consistent with mba.com Quant strategy, but the estimate must be precise enough to distinguish the options. Review errors by translation, units, assumption, setup, arithmetic, choice use and pacing, then practise a fresh problem with a different story.

MKS Education teaches GMAT word-problem strategy in physical, online and hybrid classes in Kathmandu, with recordings for every mode, iOS and Android app practice, physical books and teacher feedback. The guided GMAT course lasts eight weeks and includes six-month access with continued support. Students who need another suitable explanation can attend suitable repeat classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. These features support a process; they do not guarantee a GMAT score, admission, scholarship, assistantship or funding.

Diagnose first

Use a current official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Data Insights errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and scholarship deadlines.

Verify claims

Use mba.com and official business-school pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

What makes the MKS GMAT learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GMAT practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official GMAC resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Write the target and units before introducing variables.
  • Use a relationship table for motion work flow and mixture problems.
  • Compare direct algebra back-solving valid-number substitution and estimation.
  • Review the cause of every wrong guessed and slow correct response.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not add work-completion times when rates should be added.
  • Do not apply a percentage without identifying its base.
  • Do not mix units or assume a diagram is to scale.
  • Do not accept a promised GMAT score from a shortcut course.
Current test context

Build your GMAT plan from diagnostic evidence

Bring target programmes, the earliest deadline and a recent official-format diagnostic. MKS can organise an eight-week guided plan with flexible modes, recordings, app practice, books, six-month access and continued support.

What is the first step in a GMAT word problem?

Identify the exact requested value and unit, then list the relevant quantities and constraints before choosing an equation.

How should I solve combined work questions?

Express each worker as a rate such as a fraction of one job per hour and combine rates for the time they work together.

Can answer choices help with word problems?

Yes. Depending on the structure, choices may support back-solving or approximation, but the chosen value must satisfy every stated condition.

Can I use a calculator for current GMAT Quant word problems?

No. A calculator is not available in the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Does memorising formulas guarantee word-problem accuracy?

No. Correct translation, units, constraints and method selection are still required, and no preparation method can guarantee a GMAT score.
