GMAT Data Sufficiency Strategy for Data Insights
Determine whether the supplied statements answer the exact question uniquely, while controlling assumptions, ranges and counterexamples.
Data Sufficiency rewards disciplined evidence use more than finishing every possible calculation
The objective is to decide whether the data settle the question, not to solve beyond what is necessary.
Place the topic correctly in the current exam. Data Sufficiency belongs to Data Insights, not Quantitative Reasoning. Data Insights contains 20 questions in 45 minutes and includes Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. An on-screen calculator is available in Data Insights, but it cannot decide relevance or sufficiency. Current practice should include quantitative, verbal and data-interpretation stems rather than treating every item as a traditional algebra exercise.
Analyse the question stem before the statements. List every given restriction, define the target and decide what would constitute a complete answer. A value question normally requires one unique value; a yes-or-no question requires the same definite answer for every valid case. mba.com strategy advises deciding whether a problem allows only one value or a range. If several valid values produce the same requested result, a statement can still be sufficient; if one valid case says yes and another says no, it is insufficient.
Test statement one using only the stem and statement one. Do not borrow information from statement two. Try to prove sufficiency efficiently, but actively search for a counterexample before accepting it. Then reset and test statement two independently. Restrictions such as integer, positive, non-negative, distinct or non-zero can determine the result, so carry all stem information into both tests. Do not assume a geometric diagram is to scale or a variable has a familiar sign when the text does not say so.
Combine the statements only after each has been judged independently. Use the standard answer-choice structure consistently so cognitive effort stays on reasoning. A counterexample is powerful: two valid cases that satisfy the same statement but yield different answers prove insufficiency. For yes-or-no questions, one yes and one no are enough. For value questions, two different valid values are enough. However, examples cannot prove sufficiency by themselves; the student must show that every valid case leads to the same required result.
Review over-leveraging and under-leveraging. Over-leveraging imports an assumption or information from the other statement; under-leveraging ignores a restriction or consequence already supplied. Record the stem target, statement result, counterexample, hidden assumption, timing and final answer-choice logic for every wrong, guessed or slow correct item. Start with untimed verbalisation, then use mixed official-format DI sets and full simulations. Practise with the on-screen calculator only when calculation supports the sufficiency decision.
MKS Education offers Data Sufficiency preparation through physical, online and hybrid GMAT classes in Kathmandu. Students receive recordings in every mode, iOS and Android app practice, physical books and teacher feedback. The guided course lasts eight weeks with six-month access and continued support. Students needing another suitable explanation may join suitable repeat classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. MKS does not guarantee a GMAT score, admission, scholarship, assistantship or funding.

| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Current location | Prevents obsolete preparation. | Data Sufficiency is in Data Insights. |
| Section format | Sets pacing context. | 20 DI questions in 45 minutes. |
| Stem target | Defines sufficiency. | Unique value or definite yes or no. |
| Stem restrictions | Can decide the result. | Integer sign range distinctness and units. |
| Statement one | Must stand independently. | Use stem plus statement one only. |
| Statement two | Requires a clean reset. | Use stem plus statement two only. |
| Counterexample | Proves insufficiency. | Two valid cases with different results. |
| Combined data | Is tested only when needed. | Join statements after separate analysis. |
| Geometry | Invites assumptions. | Do not rely on scale unless stated. |
| Calculator | Supports arithmetic only. | Available in DI after the model is defined. |
| Timing | Rewards stopping at enough. | Avoid solving beyond sufficiency. |
| Error log | Separates reasoning defects. | Over-use under-use assumption and counterexample. |

Practical next steps
- Define exactly what would settle the stem before reading statements.
- Test each statement independently with every stated restriction.
- Search for counterexamples before declaring sufficiency.
- Combine statements only when the answer-choice logic requires it.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not solve further after sufficiency is established.
- Do not carry information between independent statements.
- Do not assume a figure is drawn to scale.
- Do not accept a guaranteed Data Insights or Total Score claim.
Prepare for the GMAT exam students now take
GMAC lists three 45-minute sections, 64 questions and 2 hours 15 minutes of testing, plus one optional 10-minute break.
Quantitative Reasoning
Twenty-one Problem Solving questions test arithmetic, elementary algebra, logic and analytical problem solving without a calculator.
Verbal Reasoning
Twenty-three Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions test understanding and argument evaluation.
Data Insights
Twenty questions combine quantitative, verbal and data literacy across five current question families, with an on-screen calculator.

Is Data Sufficiency part of current GMAT Quant?
No. Data Sufficiency is now one of the five Data Insights question types.
What makes a Data Sufficiency statement sufficient?
It must determine the exact requested value or a definite answer to the yes-or-no question for every valid case.
Should I combine the two statements immediately?
No. Test each statement independently first and combine them only if neither is sufficient alone and the answer-choice logic requires it.
Can I use a calculator for Data Sufficiency?
An on-screen calculator is available in Data Insights, but it cannot determine whether the information is relevant or sufficient.
Can Data Sufficiency preparation guarantee a GMAT score?
No. Strategy and practice support preparation but cannot guarantee an official section score, Total Score or admission.
