GMAT Reading Comprehension Preparation Course
Read for purpose and paragraph function, then answer main-idea, detail, inference, application, logical-structure and style questions from the passage evidence.
Reading Comprehension becomes more controllable when students track purpose structure and evidence instead of trying to memorise every sentence
The subject may be unfamiliar, but the passage supplies the information needed to answer.
Use the current official format as the starting point. Verbal Reasoning contains 23 questions in 45 minutes and is composed of Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Sentence Correction is not a current question family. Official content identifies main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure and style among the reading skills assessed. A course should therefore teach comprehension and evidence-based reasoning, not spend its schedule on obsolete grammar correction or vocabulary memorisation detached from passages.
Diagnose more than accuracy. Record passage reading time, question time, rereading, confidence and answer changes. Classify errors by main purpose, paragraph role, explicit detail, inference, application, tone, logical relationship, scope and answer-choice distortion. Also note whether the student misunderstood the passage, misread the question stem, searched the wrong paragraph or accepted a choice that was plausible but unsupported. This turns a vague complaint such as slow reading into a teachable problem.
Build a compact passage map while reading carefully. Track the topic, author’s purpose, central claim, paragraph function, contrast words, changes in viewpoint and the role of examples or evidence. Do not attempt to memorise every detail. mba.com recommends focusing on key words and phrases to preserve the overall context, and it warns against rushing through passages because the section tests comprehension. A short map gives the student a reliable location to revisit when a question asks for support.
Match the method to the question. For main-idea and purpose questions, choose an answer broad enough to represent the whole passage without adding a new claim. For detail questions, return to the relevant lines and match meaning rather than repeated vocabulary. For inference, require a conclusion supported by the text, not a reasonable outside guess. For function and structure questions, ask why the author included a paragraph, example or contrast. For application, transfer the passage’s stated principle without changing its conditions.
Evaluate answer choices by evidence, direction, scope and strength. Common traps reverse a relationship, exaggerate cautious language, describe only one paragraph, introduce outside facts or answer a nearby question. Students should justify the correct option and name the defect in each rejected option. After accuracy becomes stable, mix passage lengths and question tasks under timing. Review wrong, guessed and slow correct answers, then combine Reading Comprehension with Critical Reasoning and all three exam sections in official-format simulations.
