Define the relationship first

Arithmetic and algebra improve when every rule is connected to a GMAT decision rather than memorised in isolation

A stable foundation reduces avoidable calculation, but reasoning determines which foundation to use.

Begin with the current official scope. Quantitative Reasoning contains 21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes, and the section uses foundational arithmetic and elementary algebra. The official exam-content page emphasises logic and analytical skill, not advanced mathematics, and says a calculator is unavailable in Quant. Data Sufficiency belongs to Data Insights, not current Quant. A preparation plan should therefore prioritise useful relationships, mental estimation, written organisation and answer-choice evaluation instead of obsolete question families or calculator-dependent drills.

Run a diagnostic by domain and by cause. Arithmetic coverage should include integers, divisibility, primes, factors, multiples, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages, averages, weighted averages and rates. Algebra coverage should include expressions, equations, inequalities, systems, exponents, roots and translating words into variables. For every miss, record whether the cause was concept knowledge, target identification, units, an unstated assumption, setup, sign handling, computation, answer-choice interpretation or time. Two students with the same accuracy may need completely different lessons.

Practise arithmetic as relationships rather than disconnected tricks. A ratio compares quantities; a percentage describes a base; an average depends on both total and count; a rate connects amount and time. Write the base, units and requested value before calculating. Reduce fractions and estimate size so an impossible answer is visible early. When answer choices are widely spaced, official mba.com strategy advises considering approximation before committing to long computation. Estimation should be a reasoned check, not a guess that replaces the exact requirement.

Treat algebra as a language for unknown relationships. Define variables clearly, translate one phrase at a time, preserve inequality direction and test whether the result satisfies every constraint. Compare direct solving with substitution, logical cases, back-solving from answer choices and plugging in valid numbers. The best method is the simplest one that remains logically complete. A familiar-looking formula can fail when the question changes the base, unit or condition, so students should explain why each step is allowed rather than reproduce a memorised sequence.

Build a review cycle that separates accuracy from speed. First solve small official-format sets without a clock and write the target, relationship and method. Next repeat the same domain with a moderate time budget, then mix arithmetic and algebra so topic recognition is no longer obvious. Review wrong, guessed and slow correct answers. For each, state the original error, corrected reasoning, faster alternative and one new transfer question. Finally, use section checkpoints and full simulations so Quant pacing does not damage Verbal or Data Insights preparation.

MKS Education offers GMAT preparation through physical, online and hybrid classes in Kathmandu. Students receive recordings in every mode, iOS and Android app access through the MKS GMAT platform, physical books and teacher feedback. The guided course runs for eight weeks, while class and practice access continues for six months with continued support. A student who needs another suitable explanation may attend suitable repeat classes without another class charge, subject to current schedules and seats. MKS does not guarantee a score, admission, scholarship, assistantship or funding.

Diagnose first

Use a current official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Data Insights errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and scholarship deadlines.

Verify claims

Use mba.com and official business-school pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

CheckWhy it mattersWhat to verify
Current Quant formatDefines the practice environment.21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes.
Number propertiesControls integer relationships.Factors multiples divisibility parity and remainders.
Fractions and decimalsSupport comparison and change.Reduce convert estimate and track the base.
Ratios and proportionsModel relative quantities.Write consistent order and preserve units.
PercentagesDepend on the correct base.Identify original amount change and new value.
RatesConnect quantities across time.Use distance work flow or unit-rate relationships.
AveragesCombine total and count.Check weighted groups and changed membership.
ExpressionsRepresent relationships compactly.Simplify only with valid operations.
Equations and systemsSolve linked unknowns.Define variables and verify every condition.
InequalitiesDescribe ranges and constraints.Track signs endpoints and feasible values.
EstimationCan prevent unnecessary calculation.Use answer spacing and plausible magnitude.
Error logTurns mistakes into a plan.Cause correction faster method and transfer item.
MKS Education: MKS can use a diagnostic to assign the right arithmetic or algebra concept class, recording, app set, physical-book drill and official-format checkpoint instead of giving every student the same worksheet.
Connected preparation

What makes the MKS GMAT learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GMAT practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official GMAC resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Confirm that the syllabus follows the current Problem Solving format.
  • Diagnose concepts translation units calculation and timing separately.
  • Explain the relationship before selecting a formula or method.
  • Move from accurate domain sets to mixed timed official-format practice.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not prepare current Quant as a Data Sufficiency section.
  • Do not depend on a calculator during Quant practice.
  • Do not memorise shortcuts without conditions and verification.
  • Do not accept a promised Quant or Total Score.
Current test context

Prepare for the GMAT exam students now take

GMAC lists three 45-minute sections, 64 questions and 2 hours 15 minutes of testing, plus one optional 10-minute break.

Quantitative Reasoning

Twenty-one Problem Solving questions test arithmetic, elementary algebra, logic and analytical problem solving without a calculator.

Verbal Reasoning

Twenty-three Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions test understanding and argument evaluation.

Data Insights

Twenty questions combine quantitative, verbal and data literacy across five current question families, with an on-screen calculator.

What arithmetic is tested on the current GMAT?

Preparation commonly uses number properties, fractions, decimals, ratios, percentages, averages and rates as foundations for Problem Solving.

What algebra should I prepare for the GMAT?

Focus on elementary algebra such as expressions, equations, inequalities, systems and translating stated relationships into variables.

Can I use a calculator in GMAT Quantitative Reasoning?

No. The official exam-content page says a calculator is not available in the Quantitative Reasoning section.

Is advanced mathematics required for current GMAT Quant?

The official scope focuses on foundational arithmetic and elementary algebra applied through logic and analytical problem solving.

Can arithmetic and algebra classes guarantee a GMAT score?

No. Diagnosis, instruction and practice can improve preparation quality but cannot guarantee an official score or admission result.
