GMAT Score Scale Percentiles and Score Report Guide

Read the edition first. GMAC lists the current Total Score scale as 205–805, while the previous GMAT edition used 200–800. The distributions are different, so a current 700-style interpretation is not valid. GMAC notes that 645 on the current exam is equivalent to 700 on the previous edition in its published comparison context, but advises candidates and schools to focus on percentile ranking rather than raw-number comparison.

Understand the Total Score. Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights section scores are equally weighted in the current total. A high result in one area does not make another section irrelevant. Review the section scores and percentile rankings together to identify whether the total is balanced or whether one section creates a clear preparation priority for a responsible retake discussion.

Interpret percentiles correctly. A 75th-percentile ranking means the candidate performed better than 75 percent of the referenced test-taking population, not that 75 percent of questions were correct. Percentile tables are based on a defined data period and can be updated. Save the date of the official table used and avoid turning an old percentile screenshot into a permanent admission rule.

Use the detailed Official Score Report. GMAC says the report is normally available in the mba.com account within 3–5 days and may occasionally take up to 20 days. It includes total and section scores, percentile rankings, performance by content domain, question type and fundamental skill, time management and a summary of Question Review and Edit activity. Programme-and-school comparison appears when a score is sent to programmes.

Turn insight into action. Compare content strength with timing. A weak domain may need concept instruction, while a strong domain with poor late-section timing may require pacing and decision work. Review changed answers to see whether editing helped. Classify wrong, guessed, slow and skipped questions from official practice alongside the score-report insight, then choose targeted lessons and fresh questions before another full simulation.
