GMAT Quantitative Reasoning Format and Syllabus
Prepare for 21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes by connecting foundations to translation, logic, estimation and efficient checking without a calculator.
The syllabus is not advanced mathematics but it demands precise translation and controlled decisions
Students often lose time because they calculate before understanding the relationship or memorise shortcuts without checking when they apply.
Start with the official boundary. Quant is one 45-minute section with 21 Problem Solving questions. The current exam content page describes arithmetic and elementary algebra as the knowledge base and emphasises logic and analysis. This means a student should be able to represent relationships, test cases, estimate, compare options and verify constraints. Advanced university mathematics is not the target, but weak basic operations can still block reasoning.
Audit arithmetic foundations. Check integers, factors, multiples, primes, parity, signs, absolute value, fractions, decimals, ratios, proportions, percentages, averages, weighted averages, rates and unit conversion. Do not create a memorisation list in isolation. Each topic should be practised through a decision: what is known, what is asked, which relationship connects them, whether an exact value is necessary and how the answer can be checked.
Audit algebraic control. Students should translate words into expressions or equations, simplify correctly, solve linear relationships, work with inequalities and exponents, understand functions at an elementary level and manage simultaneous conditions. The important skill is preserving meaning. An equation solved quickly but built from the wrong relationship is still wrong, so every solution should include a translation check before calculation.
Practise no-calculator methods. Use factorisation, cancellation, estimation, compatible numbers, bounds, plugging in values and testing answer choices when appropriate. Mental speed should not replace written structure; short organised working reduces sign and copying errors. Because the official calculator is available in Data Insights but not Quant, practice platforms and classroom drills must enforce the correct section rule.
Build pacing from accuracy evidence. The average is a little over two minutes per question, but equal time per item is not required. Record questions that were wrong, guessed, slow or abandoned and classify the cause as concept, translation, method, calculation, option selection or time allocation. In official-format practice, bookmark uncertain responses while protecting enough time to answer every question; review is possible only when time remains.
MKS Education connects foundation teaching to physical, online and hybrid GMAT classes, recordings in every mode, iOS and Android practice, physical books, an eight-week guided course, six-month access and continued support. Students who need additional foundation repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge subject to schedules and seats. Progress requires practice and feedback; no Quant course can guarantee a score or admission outcome.
Diagnose first
Use a current official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Data Insights errors before choosing weekly priorities.
Match the goal
Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and scholarship deadlines.
Verify claims
Use mba.com and official business-school pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.
Turn the comparison into checks you can verify
Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.
| Check | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Section size | Defines pacing evidence. | 21 questions in 45 minutes. |
| Question type | Old formats can misdirect study. | Problem Solving only in current Quant. |
| Arithmetic | Reliable operations support reasoning. | Integers fractions ratios rates percentages averages. |
| Elementary algebra | Relationships need symbolic control. | Expressions equations inequalities and functions. |
| Translation | Many errors happen before calculation. | Define variables units and relationships. |
| Number sense | Estimation reduces unnecessary work. | Bounds magnitude signs and compatible numbers. |
| Answer choices | Options can support efficient testing. | Substitution elimination and verification. |
| Calculator | Section tools determine method. | Not permitted in Quant. |
| Accuracy log | A score hides the cause. | Concept method calculation and attention. |
| Pacing | Some items deserve different time. | Checkpoint and exit decisions. |
| Review | Only possible with remaining time. | Bookmark then edit no more than three answers. |
| Official questions | Authentic wording matters. | Sample questions and official practice sets. |
What makes the MKS GMAT learning system different
The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.
Physical online and hybrid
Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.
Recordings in every mode
Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.
iOS and Android practice
Use structured GMAT practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.
Physical books
Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official GMAC resources.
Eight weeks plus six months
Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.
Multiple suitable classes
Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.
Practical next steps
- Measure arithmetic algebra translation accuracy and timing separately.
- Write the relationship before calculating.
- Use fresh targeted sets after each correction.
- Move from untimed accuracy to mixed timed official-format work.
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not study advanced mathematics that the current section does not test.
- Do not use a calculator during Quant practice.
- Do not treat Data Sufficiency as a current Quant question type.
- Do not repeat full sections without reviewing the error cause.
Prepare for the GMAT exam students now take
GMAC lists three 45-minute sections, 64 questions and 2 hours 15 minutes of testing, plus one optional 10-minute break.
Quantitative Reasoning
Twenty-one Problem Solving questions test arithmetic, elementary algebra, logic and analytical problem solving without a calculator.
Verbal Reasoning
Twenty-three Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions test understanding and argument evaluation.
Data Insights
Twenty questions combine quantitative, verbal and data literacy across five current question families, with an on-screen calculator.
Build your GMAT plan from diagnostic evidence
Bring target programmes, the earliest deadline and a recent official-format diagnostic. MKS can organise an eight-week guided plan with flexible modes, recordings, app practice, books, six-month access and continued support.
