GMAT Verbal Reasoning Format and Syllabus

Anchor preparation to the current boundary: 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions in 45 minutes. Sentence Correction belonged to an older version and should not dominate a 2026 plan. General English improvement can support reading, but the official task is not an IELTS-style language test. It measures the decisions required to understand passages and evaluate arguments.

For Reading Comprehension, build a passage map. Identify the main purpose, paragraph roles, viewpoint shifts, claims, evidence and unresolved questions without trying to memorise every detail. Return to the relevant lines for specific questions. The official content description includes main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure and style. Each selected answer must be supported by what is stated or properly implied.

For Critical Reasoning, identify the conclusion, evidence, assumptions and logical gap before judging options. The official guidance asks candidates to distinguish facts, necessary consequences, claims and how well those claims are supported. Practise strengthening, weakening, assumptions, inference, evaluation, explanation and plan questions through structure rather than memorised trigger words. Subject-matter opinions must not replace the argument on screen.

Train option elimination explicitly. Wrong answers can be outside scope, too strong, reversed, merely true but irrelevant, based on an unsupported assumption or directed at the wrong part of the argument. Write the reason for rejecting each attractive option during untimed review. Then test whether the same reasoning transfers to a fresh question before adding strict time pressure.

Build reading speed through accuracy, not skimming. Read varied business, science and social-science material, summarise paragraph purpose and locate evidence. In timed sets, track passage reading, question decision and review time separately. Bookmark uncertain responses, but answer every question; the Question Review and Edit screen appears only if time remains and allows no more than three answer changes per section.
