Map the score profile before the timetable

A 7.5 plan needs balanced control and fewer costly inconsistencies

At this level, one weak section can block admission even when stronger receptive skills lift the average. Treat overall and component requirements as two separate checks.

Begin with score-profile mathematics. The official IELTS scoring guide says the overall band is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds to the next half band and an average ending in .75 rounds to the next whole band. Calculate several valid profiles, but never use rounding to ignore a course minimum for Writing, Speaking or another section.

Use a full diagnostic and a requirement sheet. Record the test type, target course, overall band, section minimums, deadline and current four-skill evidence. A learner with strong Listening and Reading but inconsistent Writing needs criterion-level review; a learner with balanced 7.0 scores needs broad precision and timing work. The plan must reflect the actual pattern rather than a generic high-band timetable.

For receptive skills, official guidance shows about 35 correct answers as the average Band 8 level in Listening and Academic Reading, while exact conversion varies by test version. A 7.5 target therefore needs consistently high accuracy, careful spelling, paraphrase recognition and stable timing. Analyse each miss by cause, and repeat the same question type only after the method is clear.

Writing and Speaking cannot be improved through score arithmetic. Writing needs complete task fulfilment, clear progression, flexible vocabulary and frequent accurate sentences; Task 2 carries more weight. Speaking needs sustained fluency, flexible language, grammatical control and intelligible pronunciation. Use annotated work, targeted rewrites, recorded answers and new tasks that prove the correction transfers without a script.

Build a staged mock policy. Use short diagnostic sets early, timed sections after the method is reliable and full computer mocks at decision points. Keep at least three comparable reviewed results rather than relying on one peak performance. Book only when the evidence is close to both the overall and section targets and the result window fits the application deadline.
