MS Economics vs Applied Economics vs Econometrics in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A quantitative comparison for Nepali economics, business, mathematics and social-science graduates choosing broad economic training, policy application or causal and statistical depth.
Choose by the balance of theory, application and measurement.
Economics usually gives the broadest foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods. Applied Economics uses those tools to study industries, policies, resources or consumer decisions. Econometrics concentrates on statistical identification, estimation, causal inference and the quality of economic evidence.
The titles overlap. Read the required theory sequence, mathematics prerequisites, econometrics depth and capstone or thesis model before deciding which programme fits your goals.
Compare the question each route trains you to answer.
| Route | Typical core | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|
| MS Economics | Microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics and electives | Students wanting a broad analytical base or later doctoral preparation |
| MS Applied Economics | Economic theory plus policy, industry or resource applications | Students wanting decision-focused analysis in a defined domain |
| MS Econometrics or Quantitative Economics | Probability, statistics, causal inference and computation | Students wanting the deepest measurement and empirical toolkit |
Count the required theory and methods courses.
A general Economics master’s may require graduate microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics, then allow electives in development, labour, international, public or financial economics. Applied Economics may reduce abstract theory in favour of sector analysis, forecasting, policy evaluation or client projects. Econometrics routes may require real analysis, mathematical statistics, optimization and advanced programming.
Compare the complete sequence, not a few attractive electives. Record whether the final requirement is a thesis, research paper, internship, practicum or capstone and whether students can take doctoral-level courses.
Map mathematics before writing the statement.
Programmes may expect calculus, linear algebra, probability, statistics and intermediate microeconomics or macroeconomics. Quantitative routes may expect multivariable calculus, differential equations, real analysis or stronger programming. Business graduates can be competitive, but a transcript without sufficient mathematics may not meet the prerequisite floor.
Create a prerequisite table using the exact titles and grades from your Nepal transcript. Add syllabus descriptions only when requested. If a university offers bridge courses, confirm whether they count toward the degree and how they affect cost and completion time.
Use the exact programme code as evidence.
NCES distinguishes Economics, Applied Economics and Econometrics and Quantitative Economics within the Economics CIP family. A university may use a different code when the curriculum is interdisciplinary. For STEM OPT planning, ask the institution for the exact CIP code assigned to the specific programme and verify the code on the Form I-20.
Then compare it with the current DHS STEM Designated Degree Program List. Do not assume that a programme is STEM-designated because it contains “quantitative,” “analytics” or “econometrics” in the marketing title.
Show that you can reason with models and data.
GRE policy varies. Where the score is required or meaningfully considered, strong quantitative preparation should reinforce transcript evidence rather than replace missing prerequisites. English proficiency may be shown through IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test or TOEFL only where accepted by the university.
Use a research paper or project to explain the question, data, economic framework, identification strategy, assumptions, results and limitations. For policy work, distinguish correlation from causation. Connect your preparation to the GRE guide and English-test guide.
Score evidence instead of chasing labels.
Compare prerequisite fit, compulsory theory, econometrics depth, software and data training, faculty alignment, thesis or capstone access, assistantship evidence, total cost and exact CIP code. Check whether the programme is designed for professional practice or doctoral preparation and whether that outcome matches your plan.
Then use the USA master’s guide, thesis versus non-thesis guide, assistantship guide and shortlisting workflow.
Make the statement programme-specific.
Explain the economic problem you want to study, why current training is insufficient and which required courses, faculty areas or capstone structure address the gap. Avoid claiming a precise career outcome from a generic economics title. If your project used group data or code, identify your own contribution and keep every link reproducible.
A strong file combines quantitative readiness, careful interpretation and a realistic reason for choosing the route. It does not substitute broad statements about “the economy” for a testable question.
Prepare for USA admission with MKS Education
GRE preparation is often the relevant graduate-admission route where economics programmes use a test score. English-test rules vary. SAT and GMAT preparation remain available for undergraduate and business-school pathways. MKS Education provides structured SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL-focused preparation in Nepal. We connect test preparation with programme selection, application evidence and realistic deadlines.

Economics, Applied Economics and Econometrics FAQs
Which route has the broadest theory base?
A general Economics master’s usually provides the broadest microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative foundation.
What is Applied Economics?
Applied Economics uses economic theory and analytical methods to investigate particular industries, policies, commodities or resources.
What does Econometrics emphasize?
Econometrics emphasizes statistical and mathematical methods for estimating economic relationships and evaluating evidence.
Is every economics master’s STEM-designated?
No. Confirm the exact institutional CIP code and compare it with the current DHS STEM list.
Is the GRE always required?
No. GRE policy varies by programme and intake; verify the current department page before preparing or sending scores.
