MArch vs Urban Planning vs Construction Management in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A practical comparison for Nepali architecture, civil, planning and construction graduates choosing professional design education, city and regional planning or project delivery management.
MArch fits students pursuing advanced or professional architectural design education. Urban Planning focuses on land use, transport, housing, environment and community systems. Construction Management focuses on estimating, scheduling, contracts, safety and delivery. Licensure and accreditation checks differ for each path.
Three paths across the built environment
Architects design buildings and spatial systems. Planners shape policies and decisions across communities and regions. Construction managers organise how projects are priced, scheduled, contracted and built. A shared interest in cities does not make the curricula interchangeable.
| Path | Primary work | Evidence to compare |
|---|---|---|
| MArch | Architectural design, building systems, representation and professional practice | Portfolio, prior design education, studio sequence, professional-degree status and facilities |
| Urban Planning | Land use, transport, housing, environment, community engagement and policy | Methods, GIS, economics or statistics, studio or capstone and PAB status |
| Construction Management | Cost, schedule, contracts, logistics, safety and project controls | Technical background, estimating and scheduling courses, capstone and ACCE status where relevant |
Compare award title, programme length and prerequisites. An MArch designed for students without a professional architecture degree can differ substantially from a post-professional route.
Choose professional design education carefully
NAAB is the specialised accreditor for professional architecture degree programmes in the United States. Its directory lists the exact accredited degrees. A university may also offer MA or MS Architecture degrees that are not professional MArch programmes, so verify the award rather than assuming.
Architecture licensure is governed by US jurisdictions and includes requirements beyond the degree. A NAAB-accredited programme can meet an education requirement, but graduation itself does not issue a licence. Applicants should also compare studio culture, building technology, portfolio expectations and total programme length.
Choose cities policy and community systems
Urban and regional planning programmes can cover land use, transport, housing, economic development, environment, GIS and community engagement. The Planning Accreditation Board accredits eligible bachelor’s and master’s planning programmes and publishes a current directory.
Check the required quantitative and spatial methods. A planning programme can be policy-heavy, design-oriented or technically focused. The capstone, studio and internship structure reveal how students apply the curriculum.
Choose delivery cost and project controls
NCES defines Construction Management through budgeting, logistics, scheduling, personnel, safety, contracts, processes and applicable codes. The American Council for Construction Education publishes a directory of accredited construction degree programmes, including the degree level and current programme details.
Construction Management is not a substitute for architectural licensure or engineering design authority. It prepares a different function inside the project team. Compare it with our Civil Construction and Project Management guide.
Map architecture civil and planning evidence
BArch applicants should identify whether the target MArch is professional or post-professional and prepare a portfolio that explains process, not just final images. Civil graduates considering Construction Management should map structures, materials, estimating, scheduling and site experience. Planning applicants should show research, GIS, policy, design or community evidence.
Use the course guide after BE Engineering and application document checklist.
Verify the code for the exact award
Architecture, City and Regional Planning and Construction Management have different NCES codes. Programme titles and concentrations can still use different classifications. Ask the university which CIP code will appear on Form I-20 and verify it against the current DHS STEM list.
Do not assume that design software, GIS or engineering content automatically makes a degree STEM designated. Follow the STEM CIP guide.
Plan beyond the admissions checklist
Requirements can include transcripts, recommendations, a statement, English evidence and GRE scores. MArch programmes may require a portfolio; planning or construction routes may value quantitative prerequisites or professional experience. Policies change by programme.
Compare total credits, studio fees, equipment, insurance, living costs and duration. Longer professional programmes can have a different budget from shorter specialist master’s degrees. Use the USA cost guide.
For Architecture, confirm whether the MArch is a professional or post-professional degree and how it relates to your prior qualification and intended licensure jurisdiction. For Urban Planning and Construction Management, check the exact programme’s PAB or ACCE status where relevant, total credits, studio or fieldwork expectations and prerequisite design or technical skills. Accreditation belongs to the named programme, not automatically to every degree at the university.

Frequently asked questions about Architecture Planning and Construction
Which programme is best after Architecture or Civil Engineering in Nepal?
Choose MArch for professional architectural education and design, Urban Planning for land use and community systems, or Construction Management for cost, schedule, contracts and project delivery.
Is every Master of Architecture programme NAAB accredited?
No. NAAB accredits specific professional architecture degree programmes. Verify the exact degree and status in the current NAAB directory.
Does an MArch automatically make me a licensed architect in the USA?
No. Licensure is jurisdiction-specific and involves education, experience, examination and other requirements. A NAAB-accredited professional degree can satisfy an education component but does not itself grant a licence.
Can an architect apply to Urban Planning or Construction Management?
Often yes, subject to prerequisites. Applicants should connect design, site, policy, technical or project experience to the selected curriculum.
Do these programmes require the GRE?
Policies vary by university and intake. Design programmes may also require a portfolio, while planning or construction programmes can have different test and experience requirements.
Are all MArch Planning and Construction programmes STEM designated?
No. The exact CIP code assigned by the university and the current DHS list determine STEM designation.
