MS Pharmaceutical Sciences vs Regulatory Affairs vs MPH in USA for Nepali Pharmacy Graduates 2026–2027
A curriculum-first comparison for Nepali BPharm and pharmacy graduates choosing drug science research, product regulation or population health without confusing any route with US pharmacist licensure.
MS Pharmaceutical Sciences focuses on drugs, formulation, pharmacology, manufacturing and research. Regulatory Affairs focuses on standards, submissions, quality and product oversight. MPH focuses on populations, epidemiology, prevention and policy. None of these degrees automatically grants US pharmacist licensure.
Choose the academic problem you want to solve
Pharmaceutical Sciences asks how drugs are discovered, formulated, tested or manufactured. Regulatory Affairs asks how evidence and processes meet legal and quality requirements across the product lifecycle. Public Health asks how populations can be protected and health outcomes improved.
| Path | Main focus | Preparation to demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| MS Pharmaceutical Sciences | Pharmaceutics, pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, formulation, manufacturing and research | Chemistry, biology, pharmacology, laboratory methods and a focused research interest |
| Regulatory Affairs | Regulatory strategy, submissions, quality systems, evidence and compliance | Drug-development context, technical writing, quality or documentation experience and policy interest |
| MPH | Epidemiology, biostatistics, prevention, health policy and programmes | Statistics, public-health purpose, research methods and a concentration fit |
Degree titles can vary. Regulatory programmes may be MS, MRA or a concentration; Pharmaceutical Sciences can contain several specialisations.
Choose laboratory and drug-development depth
NCES defines Pharmaceutical Sciences through the sciences underlying drugs and therapy, including mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, pharmaceutics, pharmacology, formulation, manufacturing, quality assurance and regulation. Programmes may emphasise research or professional application.
For thesis routes, review faculty laboratories and methods. Identify whether your BPharm projects demonstrate the required chemistry, formulation, pharmacology, analysis or data skills. Compare the thesis versus non-thesis guide.
Choose evidence standards and product oversight
The FDA describes regulatory science as developing tools, standards and approaches to assess the safety, efficacy, quality and performance of regulated products. Regulatory Affairs programmes can include submissions, product lifecycle management, quality systems, clinical evidence, law, policy and technical communication.
Applicants should check whether the programme is science-heavy, policy-heavy or management-oriented. The curriculum should show how students learn to interpret requirements and organise evidence; a broad compliance title is not enough.
Choose population-level health
An MPH is appropriate when your pharmacy background connects to epidemiology, medication safety, health policy, community health, global health or health systems. CEPH publishes an official directory of accredited public-health schools and programmes.
MPH education is not clinical pharmacist training. It develops population and programme capabilities, not authority to dispense or practise pharmacy. Compare our MPH Health Informatics and Administration guide.
Separate research degrees from PharmD accreditation
ACPE accredits professional degree programmes leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. A master’s in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Regulatory Affairs or Public Health is a different academic route. US pharmacist licensure is governed by jurisdictions and includes requirements beyond admission to a graduate programme.
Students should research the responsible pharmacy board and official professional pathway before assuming any master’s will convert a Nepal BPharm into US practice rights.
Verify the classification shown on Form I-20
NCES lists Pharmaceutical Sciences as CIP 51.2010 and includes separate codes for Regulatory Science or Affairs, Pharmacy policy and Public Health fields. A university chooses the appropriate code for its curriculum. DHS STEM designation follows that exact code and current list.
Ask for the code and verify it using our STEM CIP guide. Do not infer STEM status from the word science.
Build a programme-specific plan
Applications may request transcripts, recommendations, a statement, résumé or CV, English evidence and sometimes GRE scores. Pharmaceutical research routes may value faculty fit and laboratory evidence; professional Regulatory Affairs or MPH programmes may use capstones or internships.
Compare total cost and competitive funding using the assistantship guide and USA master’s guide.
Separate academic study from professional licensure. A Pharmaceutical Sciences, Regulatory Affairs or MPH master’s does not by itself qualify a graduate to practise as a pharmacist in the United States. Compare laboratory prerequisites, regulatory-writing expectations, epidemiology or biostatistics foundations, practicum requirements and the exact career outcomes. Applicants seeking pharmacist licensure should research the appropriate official state and professional pathways independently before choosing a master’s route.

Frequently asked questions after BPharm and Pharmacy study
Which programme is best after BPharm in Nepal?
Choose Pharmaceutical Sciences for drug science and research, Regulatory Affairs for standards, submissions and product oversight, or MPH for population health, epidemiology and policy.
Does an MS Pharmaceutical Sciences degree make me a licensed pharmacist in the USA?
No. US pharmacist licensure is separate and jurisdiction-specific. ACPE accredits professional PharmD programmes, while research or regulatory master’s degrees do not themselves grant pharmacist licensure.
Is Regulatory Affairs the same as Regulatory Science?
They overlap but are not identical. Regulatory science develops tools, standards and approaches for evaluating product safety, efficacy, quality and performance; regulatory affairs often focuses on applying requirements and managing submissions and compliance.
Can a pharmacy graduate apply for an MPH?
Often yes. Applicants should show how pharmacy preparation connects to population health, epidemiology, policy, health systems or another MPH concentration.
Do these programmes require the GRE?
Policies vary by university and intake. Verify whether the GRE is required, optional, accepted or not considered before preparing.
Are all pharmaceutical and regulatory programmes STEM designated?
No. STEM status depends on the exact CIP code assigned by the institution and the current DHS list.
