MS Biotechnology vs Biomedical Sciences vs Bioinformatics in USA for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A practical comparison for Nepali biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmacy, health-science and computing graduates choosing laboratory science, biomedical research or biological data analysis.
MS Biotechnology emphasises applying biological systems and laboratory methods. Biomedical Sciences provides broad research preparation in human biology and disease-related science. Bioinformatics uses computing, statistics and databases to analyse biological data. Choose by prerequisites, laboratory or computational orientation and the research you can credibly support.
Compare the academic work before the degree name
All three programmes can contribute to biological and health research, yet daily coursework and research methods can be very different. Biotechnology often centres on laboratory techniques and applied biological production. Biomedical Sciences can be broader and may prepare students for research across molecular, cellular and physiological areas. Bioinformatics uses algorithms, statistics and software to interpret biological data.
| Path | Primary method | Preparation to demonstrate |
|---|---|---|
| MS Biotechnology | Laboratory and applied biological processes | Molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, genetics and laboratory practice |
| Biomedical Sciences | Experimental study of human biology and disease mechanisms | Biology and chemistry depth, research methods and a coherent scientific question |
| Bioinformatics | Computation and statistics for biological data | Programming, statistics, databases, algorithms and enough biology to interpret results |
A programme may combine two of these areas. The required core, faculty laboratories and thesis or capstone show its real identity.
Choose applied biological science
Biotechnology is appropriate when you want to work with molecular, cellular or microbial systems and applied laboratory processes. Programmes may emphasise bioprocessing, genomics, cell culture, quality, agricultural biotechnology, industrial applications or product development. Compare laboratory access, safety training and whether the award is research or professionally oriented.
NCES lists Biotechnology as CIP 26.1201 within Biological and Biomedical Sciences. That classification does not tell you a specific university’s concentration, so read the curriculum and project requirements.
Choose broad biomedical research preparation
Biomedical Sciences can provide a broad foundation across anatomy, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, pharmacology or disease mechanisms. Some programmes are thesis based; others are structured as professional or pre-health master’s degrees. The title should not be interpreted as medical qualification.
If your goal involves clinical practice, investigate the separate licensing and professional education pathway. A biomedical master’s does not itself grant permission to practise medicine, pharmacy, nursing or another regulated profession.
Choose biological data and computation
The National Human Genome Research Institute describes bioinformatics as using computer technology to collect, store, analyse and disseminate biological data. NIGMS highlights algorithms, computational tools, data management, visualisation and interpretation across genomics and other complex biomedical data.
Students from biology should check programming, calculus, linear algebra, probability and database prerequisites. Computing students should check genetics, molecular biology and biochemistry prerequisites. A credible portfolio can include reproducible analysis, code, a documented data pipeline and interpretation rather than only a list of software.
Inspect faculty and facilities before applying
For thesis programmes, review current faculty work and identify the methods you are prepared to learn. A biotechnology laboratory and a bioinformatics group may address similar biological questions through very different evidence. Contact faculty only when the programme process supports it and your message can refer to a genuine research connection.
Professional coursework programmes may use internships or capstones instead of a thesis. Compare our thesis versus non-thesis guide and graduate assistantship guide.
Verify the exact programme classification
NCES separates Biomedical Sciences, Bioinformatics and Biotechnology into different CIP codes. The DHS STEM list is based on the exact programme code assigned by the institution. Ask which code will appear on Form I-20 and verify it against the current official list.
STEM designation does not guarantee a job, funding or immigration benefit. It is one programme fact to verify alongside cost, research fit and all eligibility rules. See our USA STEM CIP guide.
Map prerequisites before spending on tests
Create a matrix of biology, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, laboratory methods, statistics, calculus, programming and databases. Mark completed courses and documented projects. This prevents applications to programmes whose prerequisites are missing and strengthens the statement of purpose.
Graduate applications can request transcripts, recommendations, a purpose statement, résumé or CV, English evidence and sometimes GRE scores. Follow programme-specific rules and compare our USA master’s admission guide.
Prepare for USA admission with MKS Education
For Biotechnology, Biomedical Sciences and Bioinformatics, check whether GRE scores are required or considered. MKS Education prepares students for GRE and accepted English tests including IELTS, PTE, Duolingo and TOEFL, and offers SAT support for undergraduate study planning. MKS Education provides structured SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL-focused preparation in Nepal. We connect test preparation with programme selection, application evidence and realistic deadlines.

Frequently asked questions about Biotechnology and Bioinformatics degrees
Which programme is best after BSc Biotechnology or Microbiology in Nepal?
Choose Biotechnology for applied biological processes and product development, Biomedical Sciences for broad disease and human-biology research, or Bioinformatics for computational analysis of biological data.
Can a biotechnology graduate apply to Bioinformatics?
Often yes, but programmes may expect programming, statistics, calculus or databases. Check whether foundational computing courses are built into the curriculum or required before admission.
Can a computer science graduate apply to Bioinformatics?
Many programmes accept computing graduates who can demonstrate the required biology foundation or complete bridge coursework. The exact prerequisite balance is programme-specific.
Is Biomedical Sciences the same as a medical degree?
No. Biomedical Sciences is an academic and research field. It does not by itself confer a medical licence or qualify a graduate to practise medicine in the United States.
Do these programmes require the GRE?
Policies differ by department and intake. Some require or consider GRE scores, while others are optional or do not accept them. Verify the current admissions page.
Are these programmes automatically STEM designated?
No. The programme’s exact CIP code must appear on the current DHS STEM list. Confirm the code with the university rather than relying on the degree title.
