USA Graduate Assistantship RA TA Funding Guide for Nepali Students 2026–2027
A funding-evaluation guide for Nepali master’s and PhD applicants comparing research assistantships, teaching assistantships, fellowships and written award terms.
Evaluate the written package, duties and remaining cost
An RA or TA is not automatically “full funding.” Confirm who awards it, what work is required, the stipend, tuition remission, mandatory fees, health insurance, appointment percentage, duration, summer coverage and renewal rules. Use only written, official funding in the financial plan.
Know what each award represents
EducationUSA identifies fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships and administrative assistantships as common forms of graduate university assistance. A fellowship may focus on study or research with different duties. A TA supports teaching-related work. An RA supports a research project or group. Titles and employment status vary by institution.
An admission offer and a funding offer may arrive separately. Read both. A statement that students are “eligible to apply” is not an award, and a faculty expression of interest is not guaranteed funding unless the authorised institution issues the required document.
| Package item | Questions to ask | Risk if ignored |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition remission | Full or partial, resident or nonresident rate, which credits and terms? | A large unpaid tuition balance |
| Mandatory fees | Which fees are waived, reduced or paid by the student? | Unexpected recurring charges |
| Stipend | Gross amount, payment schedule, tax information and start date? | Insufficient cash flow for living costs |
| Health insurance | Premium coverage, dependent cost and required plan? | High uncovered insurance expense |
| Appointment | RA, TA or other duties, percentage, supervisor and training? | Workload or role mismatch |
| Duration | Guaranteed period, summer support and renewal standards? | Funding gap after one term or year |
Look at the department, not only the university
Funding is often controlled at the graduate school, department, programme, laboratory or project level. Read the current programme funding page, graduate handbook and assistantship policy. Compare whether applicants are automatically considered or must submit a separate form by an earlier deadline.
EducationUSA advises applicants to ask about teaching and research assistantships and to understand responsibilities and funding level before accepting. Contact faculty only when the programme encourages it and the research fit is genuine. Avoid mass emails asking for a “fully funded seat.”
Compete with programme-relevant preparation
RA selection may examine research methods, projects, thesis work, technical skills and fit with current work. TA selection may examine subject mastery, communication and teaching potential. The application should accurately distinguish personal contributions from team results.
For many graduate pathways, GRE policy is programme-specific. Business programmes may use GMAT or GRE. MKS Education supports preparation through the MKS GRE app and MKS GMAT app. English admission may use IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic or Duolingo English Test where accepted; teaching duties may have an additional spoken-English or training standard. Use the MKS IELTS app with the relevant preparation course.
Prepare for academic and employment dimensions
An assistantship interview may ask about research experience, methods, teaching, communication, scheduling, teamwork and programme goals. Review the job or award description and prepare specific examples. Ask who supervises the work, how performance is evaluated and whether funding changes if duties or grants change.
Never claim software, laboratory, analysis or teaching experience you cannot demonstrate. If training is needed, explain the foundation you already have and a realistic learning plan.
Coordinate employment with the university DSO
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement explains that fellowships or assistantships can fall within on-campus employment contexts, and F-1 students must follow on-campus employment rules and work with the designated school official. Do not start work, exceed permitted hours or assume an off-campus location qualifies without school confirmation.
Funding and employment details can affect the Form I-20 and financial evidence. Use the authorised institution’s documents, keep the DSO informed and follow tax and Social Security processes. A future unconfirmed job should not be used to close an admission or visa funding gap.
Calculate the net annual position
Start with tuition, mandatory fees, health insurance and realistic living costs. Subtract only confirmed waivers and stipend payments, then add taxes or uncovered expenses where relevant. Check when the first stipend is paid because deposits, travel and initial housing may be due earlier.
Compare academic fit and funding stability together. A larger stipend in a high-cost city may not produce more disposable income. A package with clear multi-year support and strong supervision may be safer than a vague promise attached to an unsuitable programme.
Connect funding with the full application
Use the USA master’s admission guide, PhD admission and funding guide, USA scholarship guide and student visa financial documents checklist. Verify the current department rules before every submission.

USA graduate assistantship questions from Nepal
What is the difference between an RA and a TA in a US university?
A research assistantship normally supports research duties, while a teaching assistantship supports instruction, laboratories, grading or student learning. Exact duties and titles are set by the institution and department.
Does an assistantship always provide full funding?
No. It may include a stipend, tuition remission, insurance or only part of these costs. Verify mandatory fees, duration, summer coverage, workload and renewal conditions in the written offer.
Can master’s students receive RA or TA funding?
Some programmes offer assistantships to master’s students, while others prioritise doctoral students or do not offer them. Availability and eligibility must be checked with the department.
Do international teaching assistants need an English assessment?
A university may set spoken-English, training or certification requirements for teaching duties. These rules are separate from general admission English requirements, so check the current assistantship policy.
Can I rely on a future assistantship to fund my F-1 application?
Rely only on funding documented by the institution and accepted for the school and visa process. A possible job or informal faculty message is not the same as a written award.
How can MKS Education help graduate funding applicants?
MKS Education supports GRE or GMAT and English-test preparation, programme research, application document review and interview practice while helping students compare assistantship coverage realistically.
