Separate university rules from department rules

EducationUSA notes that graduate applicants are likely to face both institutional and departmental requirements. The graduate school may set the basic academic and English rules, while the department controls prerequisites, tests, portfolios, assistantships and faculty fit. Save both pages and record the date checked.

Compare curriculum, concentration options, capstone or thesis structure, faculty expertise, facilities, internship context and graduate outcomes. Do not use rankings as the only filter. A lower-cost programme with the right prerequisites, funding and academic match can be more sensible than a famous name with weak fit.

Confirm degree equivalency and prerequisites in writing

Nepali bachelor’s degrees differ in duration, curriculum and awarding institution. Do not assume that one programme’s decision applies to another. Check whether the admissions office recognises the exact qualification and whether the department expects prerequisite modules. If the website is ambiguous, email a concise question with the degree title, institution, duration and graduation status.

A credential evaluation is not a universal US requirement. Order one only when the programme specifies it, and follow the named service and report type. Keep official records and certified translations ready, because programmes may require direct delivery from the institution or an authorised channel.

Plan GRE, GMAT and English preparation around the shortlist

ETS describes GRE scores as one part of a broader graduate admissions file, and its guidance cautions against over-reliance on a single score. First label every programme as required, optional, not accepted or unclear. Then decide whether to prepare and submit. For technical, science and many general graduate pathways, the GRE may be relevant; for some business or management programmes, the GMAT or GRE may be accepted. Always confirm the current policy.

Make the statement, CV and recommendations agree

The statement should connect previous study, relevant projects or employment, the programme’s curriculum and a realistic next step. Name specific academic features only after checking the current department page. Avoid copying a university description or turning the statement into a life history with no programme connection.

The CV should use accurate dates and clearly distinguish employment, internships, research, publications, projects and training. Recommendations should come from people who can evaluate the applicant’s work. Give recommenders the programme deadline and submission instructions early; never write or submit a confidential letter on someone else’s behalf.

Some programmes request a portfolio, research sample, coding evidence or prerequisite worksheet. These are core admission evidence, not optional decoration. Follow file format, page limit and authorship rules exactly.

Read every assistantship and scholarship condition

EducationUSA advises graduate applicants to start financial planning early. Total costs include tuition, fees and living expenses, and actual figures vary by institution. Graduate funding may include fellowships, teaching assistantships, research assistantships or administrative assistantships. Availability is programme-specific.

Ask whether an award includes tuition remission, mandatory fees, health insurance and a stipend. Check duration, renewal conditions, workload and summer coverage. A tuition waiver without living support is not a full funding package. Compare the remaining cost against credible personal and family resources.

Use a controlled application calendar

Create one row per programme with eligibility, required tests, score-reporting codes, transcript route, recommendations, statement prompt, funding deadline and final deadline. Submit only after checking names, dates and attachments. Save the confirmation page and a copy of the final materials.
