Match your Nepal qualification to the correct US study level
A good application begins with academic progression. The proposed course should build on your education, skills and credible career plan rather than being selected only because it appears popular.
| Applicant level | Typical US route | Tests to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| After Class 12 or equivalent | Associate or bachelor’s degree depending on goals, preparation and institution policy | SAT or ACT policy plus the accepted English proficiency options |
| After a bachelor’s degree | Master’s or another justified graduate route | GRE where required or useful plus English proficiency evidence |
| MBA or business graduate study | MBA, specialised business master’s or related graduate programme | GMAT or GRE according to current school policy plus English proficiency evidence |
| PhD or doctorate | Research doctorate or a professional doctorate with programme-specific prerequisites | GRE or GMAT only where required or relevant; research fit and prior preparation are central |
Follow the five stages of a US study plan
EducationUSA organises the process around researching options, financing study, completing the application, applying for the visa and preparing for departure. Nepali students should begin early enough to compare institutions instead of rushing into a single offer.
- Research academic options: compare curriculum, prerequisites, accreditation, campus, total cost and student support.
- Plan finance: calculate tuition, living costs, insurance, travel and a realistic contingency. Review scholarships and assistantships without assuming an award.
- Complete applications: prepare transcripts, recommendations, essays, test scores and any required credential evaluation.
- Follow the visa process: after admission to an eligible school, review Form I-20, SEVIS, DS-160 and interview instructions.
- Prepare for departure: arrange accommodation, health insurance, travel and university reporting requirements.
Use the right admission test for your level
Test policies are institution-specific. A test-optional university can still have programme, scholarship, placement or international applicant conditions that require careful reading.
| Test | Common use | MKS preparation route |
|---|---|---|
| SAT | Undergraduate admission or scholarship consideration where accepted | Practise with the MKS SAT web app and join structured SAT preparation at MKS Education |
| GRE | Many master’s and doctoral applications where the programme requests or considers it | Use the MKS GRE web app with guided GRE classes and score planning |
| GMAT | MBA and selected business graduate programmes | Train with the MKS GMAT web app and join MKS GMAT preparation |
| IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or TOEFL | English proficiency where accepted by the selected institution and programme | Use the MKS IELTS web app or join MKS preparation for IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL |
Prepare the score your selected US programme actually needs
MKS Education in Kathmandu provides focused preparation for SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo English Test and TOEFL. Undergraduate students can build an SAT plan, while master’s, MBA, PhD and doctoral applicants can prepare for the GRE or GMAT when relevant. English proficiency preparation is matched to the test accepted by the chosen university.
The MKS GRE, GMAT, SAT and IELTS web apps support structured practice between classes. Book a profile review before joining so the preparation plan matches your target intake, course and current admission policy.
Check eligibility, accreditation and SEVP certification
Do not choose a university only from a ranking, advertisement or social media recommendation. Confirm that the institution can enrol international students, check recognised accreditation, then review the exact programme curriculum, faculty, facilities, outcomes and total cost. The right fit can differ by subject and student profile.
- Use the official university website for admission requirements and deadlines.
- Use the US Department of Education resources to review accreditation.
- Use the Study in the States school search to verify SEVP certification.
- Compare the course rather than assuming every programme at one university has the same value.
Prepare a consistent admission file
Requirements vary, but an application may include the following items. Documents should be genuine, complete and consistent across the university and visa stages.
- Passport and identity information
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- English translations when required
- SAT, GRE, GMAT or English test scores where applicable
- Personal statement, statement of purpose or application essays
- Letters of recommendation
- CV or résumé for relevant graduate programmes
- Financial certification requested by the university
- Portfolio, writing sample or research proposal for applicable subjects
Budget for the complete study plan
Tuition and living costs vary widely by university, programme and location. Compare the total annual cost rather than tuition alone. Include housing, meals, insurance, books, local transport, visa-related charges, travel and emergency funds. Scholarships and assistantships are competitive and should not be treated as guaranteed finance.
| Cost area | What to verify |
|---|---|
| University charges | Tuition, mandatory fees, deposits and annual increases |
| Living expenses | Housing contract, utilities, meals, transport and personal costs |
| Health and travel | Insurance rules, medical costs, flights and local arrival expenses |
| Funding | Scholarship terms, assistantship workload, sponsor evidence and loan conditions |
Move from admission to the student visa process
After acceptance by an eligible institution, review every detail on Form I-20. The current process can include the I-901 SEVIS fee, DS-160, visa fee, appointment and an interview. The US Department of State may request evidence of academic preparation, intent to depart after study and the ability to pay educational and living costs.
Follow the current instructions issued for Nepal and your individual application. Visa approval is never guaranteed by a university, consultant or test score.
Start 12 to 18 months before the intended intake
EducationUSA recommends beginning undergraduate research 12 to 18 months before the academic year. Graduate and doctoral timelines can also be long because tests, faculty fit, research documents, funding and credential evaluation may require additional time.
- 12–18 months before: shortlist subjects and institutions, review prerequisites and begin test preparation.
- 8–12 months before: take relevant tests, request transcripts and recommendations, and prepare essays.
- 6–10 months before: submit applications according to each institution’s deadline.
- After decisions: compare offers, cost, funding and conditions before accepting.
- After Form I-20: follow the current SEVIS and visa steps without using unofficial shortcuts.
- Before travel: complete housing, insurance, travel and university reporting arrangements.
Verify current rules before applying
Admission rules, test policies, fees and visa procedures can change. Use the latest official source and confirm unresolved points with the university in writing.

No. GRE policies vary by programme. Some require it, some make it optional and others do not accept it. Applicants should check the current departmental requirement before preparing or sending a score.
