How to Review SAT Mock Tests and Build an Error Log

Use a full-length Bluebook practice test under realistic conditions. College Board explains that these tests use the same multistage adaptive model as the official SAT. Work on an approved device setup, follow the section timing and take only the scheduled break. The goal is not to create a dramatic practice score; it is to collect trustworthy evidence about content, pacing, navigation and decision-making.

Open My Practice after the test and use Score Details. College Board states that students can see every question, their selected answer and the correct answer. Read the entire answer explanation, including why alternatives fail. Review incorrect answers, correct guesses and items that required excessive time. A green check can hide an unstable method that will not transfer to a different question.

Record enough context to make the log actionable. Include the date, practice-test name, section, module, domain, skill, difficulty, question identifier, time concern, selected answer and correct answer. Then name the cause: missing concept, passage or problem translation, unsupported inference, grammar-rule gap, calculator entry, careless execution, timing decision or test-interface issue. “Silly mistake” is not a diagnosis unless the student identifies the exact broken step.

Write the correction in the student’s own words. For a Math problem, state the equation, relationship or checking method that should have been used. For Reading and Writing, quote or describe the evidence, rhetorical relationship or sentence structure that controls the answer. Add one prevention rule, such as defining units before calculation or identifying independent clauses before choosing punctuation. The log should make the next attempt different.

Assign targeted practice and a retest date. College Board’s Student Question Bank contains thousands of official questions and can be filtered by section, domain, skill and difficulty. Choose a small fresh set that matches the error, review it carefully and then test the same skill again after a delay. Escalate difficulty only when the method remains accurate. A corrected old answer may reflect memory; a fresh question tests learning.
