IRCC says eligible students may work off campus only after their study program begins, while studying full-time at a designated learning institution in a qualifying program of at least six months that leads to a degree, diploma or certificate. The student must hold valid status, meet all printed conditions and keep actively pursuing studies. A language-only, general-interest or prerequisite-only program does not normally create off-campus work eligibility.

The study permit should contain wording that authorizes employment on or off campus under the relevant regulations. Service Canada needs a valid study permit, work permit or visitor record that authorizes work. If an otherwise eligible study permit lacks the work condition, IRCC says the student must request an amendment before applying for a SIN. Do not ask an employer to ignore missing wording.

During regular academic sessions, an eligible international student can currently work up to 24 hours per week off campus. Unlimited off-campus hours may be permitted during a scheduled break when all conditions are met. Authorized leave, a school-switching gap without study, loss of full-time status outside the final-semester exception or other changed circumstances can stop work authorization even though the SIN remains visible on payroll records.

Service Canada permits eligible applicants to apply online, by mail or in person. Use only the official Canada.ca application route. The exact document list depends on the applicant’s status and name, but a temporary resident normally needs a valid immigration document that authorizes work plus an accepted identity document. Provide clear, complete digital copies when using the online route and keep the submission confirmation.

Names, date of birth and identity should match the passport and immigration record. If documents show different names, prepare the accepted legal evidence connecting them. Do not send originals by mail unless the current official instructions expressly require them, and never pay a private seller for a supposedly faster SIN. Service Canada does not charge an application fee.

A Nepal applicant should plan the SIN step after arriving and receiving the actual study permit at the port of entry. The port-of-entry letter is not the study permit. Inspect the printed permit immediately for the correct name, expiry date, school-related details and work condition. If anything material is wrong, raise it through the proper IRCC correction or amendment process before employment.

Service Canada says SINs issued to temporary residents begin with 9 and expire on the same date as the immigration document authorizing work. The number is normally retained when the record is updated; the student should not apply for a completely new identity simply because a permit was extended. Apply to update the SIN record after receiving the new permit and preserve both the new confirmation and immigration approval.

When a work- or study-permit extension was submitted before expiry, immigration law may allow maintained status under specific conditions. Employment and SIN-record handling depend on the exact application, previous authorization and current proof. Give an employer the permitted evidence and use Service Canada and IRCC guidance rather than assuming an expired date can be ignored.

Employers need the SIN for payroll and tax reporting, but they also share responsibility for checking that temporary residents are authorized to work. A SIN does not erase the 24-hour regular-term limit, full-time-study condition or restrictions on starting work. Keep weekly records across every job, including commission and self-employment time, because IRCC places the compliance burden on the student.

Provide the SIN to an employer after being hired for payroll, to financial institutions when legally required for interest reporting and to government programs that lawfully need it. A landlord, ordinary scholarship search, mobile-phone seller, casual job advertiser or social-media contact generally should not receive it merely to check identity. Ask why the number is required and how it will be protected.

Do not carry the confirmation everywhere, post it online or send it through an unverified message. Store the number and confirmation securely, monitor employment and tax records and report suspected misuse through the official channels. A genuine employer should not demand money, cryptocurrency, gift cards or online-banking credentials in exchange for a job or SIN processing.
