Map sources before chasing details

GMAT Multi-Source Reasoning Strategy

Control text, tables, graphs and tabs by defining each source’s role, reading the exact task and selecting only supported evidence.

The question decides which source matters

Multi-Source Reasoning becomes manageable when students map the evidence system and avoid reading every tab with equal depth

Information density is deliberate, so selective reading is a reasoning skill rather than a shortcut.

Use the current official context. Data Insights has 20 questions in 45 minutes and includes Multi-Source Reasoning, Data Sufficiency, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis. MSR may combine verbal, quantitative and data-literacy skills. The interface can distribute evidence across several sources, and one source may not answer every task. A course should therefore teach navigation, source comparison, units and evidence selection rather than present MSR as a long Reading Comprehension passage.

Create a source map before deep analysis. For each tab or panel, note its format, purpose, date or period, units, population, assumptions and viewpoint. A text may explain a proposal, a table may contain performance data and a graph may reveal a trend. Track whether sources agree, complement or contradict one another. Official strategy notes that text can build ideas in sequence and graphics can take different forms, so students should understand how each statement or element contributes to the overall information system.

Read the exact question and response format carefully. Some tasks ask for a discrepancy, some for an inference and some for the relevant source. Decide whether the question needs one source or a combination before gathering details. Preserve denominators, dates and units when comparing values. If the task contains several statements, judge each independently from the evidence. Do not assume that every source is relevant, and do not calculate merely because a table contains numbers.

Use only the supplied data. mba.com explicitly advises candidates not to let subject familiarity influence an answer. A plausible business fact is irrelevant unless the presented sources support it. For an inference, require a conclusion that follows from the data. For a discrepancy, state exactly which claims or values conflict and whether time periods or definitions explain the difference. For relevance, identify the source that contains the information needed to resolve the task, not simply the source with the most detail.

Control timing with targeted navigation. Read source headings and the task before repeatedly switching tabs. Keep a compact note of key variables and source roles so facts are not confused. Review wrong, guessed and slow correct answers by source-map error, task interpretation, unit mismatch, outside assumption, unsupported inference, incomplete response or time. Start with untimed explanation, then use mixed official-format DI sets and full three-section simulations. The on-screen calculator can support arithmetic but not evidence selection.

MKS Education teaches Multi-Source Reasoning through physical, online and hybrid GMAT classes in Kathmandu. Recordings are available in every mode, alongside iOS and Android app practice, physical books and teacher feedback. The guided course runs for eight weeks with six-month access and continued support. Students needing another suitable explanation may join suitable repeat classes without another class charge, subject to schedules and seats. MKS does not guarantee a GMAT score, admission, scholarship, assistantship or funding.

Diagnose first

Use a current official-format baseline and classify Quant Verbal and Data Insights errors before choosing weekly priorities.

Match the goal

Connect the test date and preparation schedule to official programme and scholarship deadlines.

Verify claims

Use mba.com and official business-school pages for changing format, fees, dates and score-use policies.

Evidence table

Turn the comparison into checks you can verify

Use the same questions for every provider and save the written answer. A transparent system is easier to compare than a headline promise.

What makes the MKS GMAT learning system different

The live class, revision, independent practice and extended support work together instead of ending on the last teaching day.

Physical online and hybrid

Choose a suitable mode and confirm the current timetable for Kathmandu or remote learning.

Recordings in every mode

Physical, online and hybrid students can revisit difficult concepts and recover missed work.

iOS and Android practice

Use structured GMAT practice and review through the MKS digital learning system outside class.

Physical books

Follow organised print material alongside app practice, teacher guidance and official GMAC resources.

Eight weeks plus six months

Eight weeks of guided teaching connects to six-month learning access and continued support.

Multiple suitable classes

Students needing repetition may join suitable classes without another class charge, subject to schedule and seats.

Practical next steps

  • Map each source by purpose date units and viewpoint.
  • Read the task before gathering detailed evidence.
  • Use only the source or combination needed for the decision.
  • Check every component of a multi-part response.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Do not give every source equal reading time automatically.
  • Do not use outside subject knowledge as evidence.
  • Do not compare values with different units or periods.
  • Do not accept a guaranteed Data Insights or Total Score claim.
Current test context

Prepare for the GMAT exam students now take

GMAC lists three 45-minute sections, 64 questions and 2 hours 15 minutes of testing, plus one optional 10-minute break.

Quantitative Reasoning

Twenty-one Problem Solving questions test arithmetic, elementary algebra, logic and analytical problem solving without a calculator.

Verbal Reasoning

Twenty-three Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions test understanding and argument evaluation.

Data Insights

Twenty questions combine quantitative, verbal and data literacy across five current question families, with an on-screen calculator.

What is GMAT Multi-Source Reasoning?

It is a Data Insights question type that asks candidates to analyse information from multiple text or graphic sources and make evidence-based decisions.

Do I need prior knowledge of the MSR subject?

No. Official strategy says all information needed is provided and outside subject knowledge should not influence the answer.

What can Multi-Source Reasoning questions ask?

They may ask candidates to identify discrepancies, draw inferences or determine which source is relevant, among other evidence-based tasks.

Can I use a calculator in Multi-Source Reasoning?

An on-screen calculator is available in Data Insights, but it cannot select the relevant source or justify an inference.

Can MSR preparation guarantee a GMAT score?

No. Structured practice and feedback cannot guarantee an official Data Insights score, Total Score or admission result.
