What Is a Good GMAT Score for MBA Admission

Interpret the current 205–805 GMAT scale through percentile ranking, verified programme policy and recent class-profile evidence rather than one universal cutoff.

Programme context before a target

A useful score target connects current scale percentile school evidence and the candidate’s wider profile

Students should avoid treating an old 700 benchmark as though it were the same raw score on the current edition.

Identify the exam edition first. GMAC lists the current Total Score range as 205–805, while the previous GMAT edition used 200–800. The distributions differ, so raw scores from the two editions should not be compared directly. GMAC states that 645 on the current exam is equivalent to 700 on the previous edition in its published comparison context and recommends percentile ranking for meaningful comparison.

Read the percentile correctly. A percentile is the share of test takers the candidate performed better than, not the percentage of questions answered correctly. Percentile tables use a defined data period and may be updated as the testing population changes. Save the official table date when researching. Review the Total Score and the three section scores because the current total weights Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights equally.

Research each target programme on its own website. Confirm whether the GMAT is required, optional, accepted as one of several tests or eligible for a waiver. Then find the latest entering-class profile or admissions report. Record the average or median, full or middle range, edition, data year and sample wording. A class average is not automatically a minimum, and an admitted range is not a promise that every applicant inside it will be accepted.

Set a working target in context. A candidate near or above recent school evidence may have stronger test evidence, while a lower score may need to be balanced by academic record, work achievements, quantitative coursework, leadership, essays, recommendations and interview performance. The correct response is not always another test attempt. Compare the cost and time of retesting with improvements available elsewhere in the application.

Check programme purpose and section relevance. Some admissions teams may pay particular attention to quantitative readiness for analytical curricula, but only the programme’s current official guidance should drive that interpretation. Do not invent a section cutoff. Use the Official Score Report’s content, question-type, skill and time insights to decide whether a retake plan can address a clear weakness rather than chasing a vague higher number.

What is the current GMAT Total Score range?

The current GMAT Total Score ranges from 205 to 805.

Is there one good GMAT score for every MBA?

No. A useful target depends on each programme’s current policy, class profile and the candidate’s wider application.

Is a school’s average GMAT score the minimum?

Not necessarily. An average or median describes the class centre and should not be presented as an automatic cutoff.

Should I compare my current score with an old 700 target?

Use current-edition percentile context because the current and previous raw-score distributions are different.

Can a good GMAT score guarantee MBA admission?

No. Business schools review applications under their own holistic criteria and no score guarantees admission.
