Graduate Visa vs Skilled Worker Visa
The Graduate and Skilled Worker routes can both support employment after UK study, but they solve different problems. The Graduate route offers temporary work flexibility without employer sponsorship; Skilled Worker ties permission to an eligible sponsored job and can lead to settlement.
The core difference between the two routes
One route is qualification-led and flexible; the other is job-led and sponsored.
| Feature | Graduate visa | Skilled Worker visa |
|---|---|---|
| Primary basis | Successful completion of an eligible UK course and sponsor reporting. | Eligible job offer from a Home Office-approved sponsor. |
| Employer sponsorship | Not required. | Required through a valid Certificate of Sponsorship. |
| Job flexibility | Most jobs, job search, self-employment and voluntary work are permitted. | Work is centred on the sponsored job, with additional-work rules. |
| Long-term role | Temporary post-study permission that cannot be extended. | A route that can lead to settlement when all requirements are met. |
Application date changes Graduate visa length
The 2027 change makes timing part of the comparison.
| Situation | Graduate visa duration | Planning effect |
|---|---|---|
| Application by 31 December 2026 | Two years for eligible non-doctoral graduates. | More time for broad experience and a later sponsored switch. |
| Application from 1 January 2027 | Eighteen months for eligible non-doctoral graduates. | Start sponsor-focused job preparation earlier. |
| PhD or other doctoral qualification | Three years under the current rule. | Longer flexibility, but the route still cannot be extended. |
| Skilled Worker | Permission length follows the sponsored application and can be extended if requirements continue. | Consider job stability, sponsor commitment and settlement planning. |
Compare what must be ready before applying
The routes have different evidence bottlenecks.
| Requirement | Graduate visa | Skilled Worker visa |
|---|---|---|
| Current status | Apply in the UK before Student or Tier 4 permission expires after the provider reports successful completion. | An in-country Student switch must meet course-completion, post-course start-date or qualifying PhD-study conditions. |
| Job offer | Not required. | Required in an eligible occupation. |
| Sponsor | Education provider reporting supports Graduate eligibility; no employer sponsor. | Employer must be approved and assign a Certificate of Sponsorship. |
| Salary | No route salary threshold, though employment law still applies. | Normally at least £41,700 and the occupation going rate, whichever is higher, unless a valid lower-salary option or special scale applies. |
Do not reduce Skilled Worker eligibility to one number
Occupation, going rate and tradeable points must be checked together.
| Case | Current headline | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Standard application | At least £41,700 and 100% of the applicable going rate, whichever is higher. | Confirm occupation code, weekly hours and official going-rate table. |
| New entrant or qualifying graduate | Can qualify from £33,400 and 70% of the going rate when every new-entrant condition is met. | Check age, recent Student status, professional training and the four-year total limit. |
| Relevant PhD | Possible 80% STEM or 90% non-STEM going-rate treatment with the applicable £33,400 or £37,500 floor. | Confirm the occupation qualifies and the doctorate is relevant. |
| Health or education | Different national pay-scale rules can apply. | Use the dedicated official page and correct occupation table. |
Compare flexibility after approval
The right route depends partly on how certain your career direction is.
| Decision | Graduate visa | Skilled Worker visa |
|---|---|---|
| Changing employer | No new immigration application merely because the employer changes. | A new job or employer can require an update and new sponsorship. |
| Trying different work | Most employment and self-employment are allowed, except professional sport. | Duties and occupation remain tied to sponsored conditions. |
| Job loss | Permission is not based on one employer, though time continues to run. | Loss of sponsored employment can affect permission and requires urgent advice. |
| Building settlement time | Graduate permission is not a route to settlement. | Qualifying Skilled Worker time can count toward settlement. |
Compare the complete route cost
Visa fees are only one part of the decision.
| Cost or risk | Graduate route question | Skilled Worker question |
|---|---|---|
| Application and health surcharge | Can you fund the full Graduate application and surcharge without a job? | What will the employer pay, and which costs remain yours? |
| Time value | Will the flexible period materially improve your experience and search? | Could an immediate sponsored start move the settlement timeline earlier? |
| Employer dependency | Low immigration dependency on one employer. | How stable is the role and how experienced is the sponsor? |
| Future switch | Can you reach an eligible sponsored role before permission ends? | Can salary, occupation and sponsor conditions continue through extensions? |
When each route may be the stronger fit
These are planning patterns, not automatic answers.
| Scenario | Potentially stronger route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible sponsored offer ready | Skilled Worker may be efficient. | It avoids using Graduate time first and starts sponsored-route residence earlier. |
| Still exploring sectors | Graduate may offer useful flexibility. | You can work across most jobs without employer sponsorship while building evidence. |
| Offer below Skilled Worker rules | Graduate may cover lawful work if all Graduate requirements are met. | The job can build experience, but future sponsorship still needs a separate plan. |
| Long-term employer committed | Skilled Worker may align with settlement goals. | The sponsor, role and salary already satisfy the route rather than depending on a later conversion. |
Make the comparison before your Student permission expires
Build two timelines so a missed deadline does not decide for you.
| Step | Action | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Confirm completion | Check when the provider will report successful completion to the Home Office. | Written university guidance and Student permission expiry date. |
| Audit job offer | Verify employer licence, occupation code, salary, going rate, hours and start date. | Written offer and employer sponsorship confirmation. |
| Model both routes | Compare duration, fees, surcharge, employment flexibility and settlement effect. | A dated route table using current official guidance. |
| Apply correctly | Submit the chosen in-country application before current permission expires and avoid prohibited travel while pending. | Application confirmation and saved supporting documents. |
