Internships in the UK for International Students

A UK internship can turn classroom knowledge into evidence that employers understand, but international students must separate an ordinary internship from an assessed course placement. The visa conditions, university approval, working hours and pay position can differ.

Important: Immigration conditions and employment status are individual. Confirm the role, dates, hours, pay and placement status with your university international office and the employer before accepting.
Understand the route

Internship, placement and work experience are not the same

The label used in an advert does not decide the immigration or employment position.

Opportunity What it usually means First verification
Course work placement Integral and assessed activity formally attached to the course. Ask whether it is recorded by the university and covered by the CAS or sponsor process.
Vacation internship Temporary work experience undertaken during an official vacation. Check the university’s official term dates and the work conditions on your eVisa.
Part-time internship Experience alongside teaching weeks, often for a fixed number of hours. Count every employer together within the weekly Student visa limit.
Graduate internship An internship after successful course completion. Confirm the immigration permission that will cover the entire role, not merely the interview date.
Visa compliance

Apply the Student visa work rules correctly

A permitted course placement is distinct from ordinary term-time employment.

Rule Current position Practical action
Ordinary work Eligible degree-level Students at qualifying sponsors normally have up to 20 hours each Monday-to-Sunday week in term time. Add hours from every paid and unpaid role where the activity counts as work.
Assessed placement Appendix Student permits an integral, assessed placement that satisfies ST 17.1 to ST 17.3. Keep the university placement letter and provide it to the employer for right-to-work checks.
Placement length Normally no more than one third of the course; qualifying degree-level courses at track-record higher education providers may reach one half. Ask the sponsor to confirm the permitted maximum before signing a long contract.
Restricted activity Student conditions restrict self-employment, business activity and filling a permanent full-time vacancy, subject to narrow rule exceptions. Do not assume a freelance or contractor label makes an internship permitted.
Pay and rights

Check whether the internship must be paid

The word intern has no special legal status; employment status and the facts of the arrangement matter.

Situation Pay position What to request
Worker status An intern who is a worker is normally entitled to the applicable National Minimum Wage. Request written hours, rate, holiday arrangements and payroll details.
Required student placement A required placement of no more than one year on a UK further or higher education course is exempt from minimum wage entitlement. Budget carefully and confirm expenses, insurance and supervision before accepting.
Work shadowing Pure observation without doing work may not attract minimum wage entitlement. Make sure duties do not quietly become productive work without review.
Voluntary worker A narrow exemption can apply for charities and specified bodies when only limited expenses are provided. Do not treat an ordinary commercial internship as volunteering.
Search strategy

Find credible internship opportunities

Use channels where the role, dates and supervision can be checked.

Channel How to use it Quality signal
University careers service Set alerts, attend employer events and ask for international-student eligibility filters. The vacancy has been reviewed and the adviser can discuss course timing.
Employer career pages Search internship, summer analyst, insight, vacation scheme and industrial placement. The advert names location, duration, pay, duties and application stages.
Professional bodies Use sector job boards, student memberships and local events. Opportunities relate to a recognised occupation and realistic entry skills.
Networking Ask alumni and lecturers for insight, then apply through an official process. No payment is requested for an offer and the company identity is verifiable.
Application

Build an internship application employers can assess

Evidence is stronger than generic claims about being hardworking.

Component Include Avoid
CV One or two pages with relevant modules, projects, tools, results and right-to-work wording that is accurate. A photo, sensitive personal data or an unsupported claim of unlimited work rights.
Cover letter Why this employer, why this role and two short evidence examples matched to the criteria. Repeating the CV or sending the same letter to every organisation.
Portfolio Concise samples with context, your contribution, method and outcome. Sharing confidential university or employer material.
Interview Use situation, task, action and result; prepare questions on supervision and learning. Guessing about visa rules—say you will provide a share code and sponsor letter where relevant.
Before accepting

Run a compliance and quality check

A legitimate opportunity should survive basic verification.

Check Evidence to obtain Why it matters
Employer identity Registered name, working website, company email and named supervisor. Reduces scam and misrepresentation risk.
Role design Written duties, location, hours, duration, pay or expenses and learning objectives. Prevents a vague role from expanding beyond permission or expectations.
University approval Placement confirmation when it is part of the course. Supports the distinct work-placement treatment and employer right-to-work check.
Insurance and safety Induction, risk arrangements, reasonable adjustments and reporting route. Protects wellbeing and clarifies responsibility.
During the role

Turn the experience into career evidence

Track outcomes without retaining confidential information.

Habit Example Career value
Weekly learning log Record tasks, tools, feedback and one improvement action. Produces specific interview examples and reflective evidence.
Outcome measures Note time saved, error reduction, audience reach or completion against plan. Shows impact rather than only duties.
Feedback points Arrange an early check-in, midpoint review and final discussion. Corrects problems before the placement ends.
Relationship building Learn team roles and request a LinkedIn connection or reference appropriately. Creates a professional network without pressuring colleagues.
Action plan

A four-stage internship timeline

Start early because competitive schemes often close before the vacation begins.

Stage Priority Deliverable
Research Map target sectors, employers, deadlines and visa-safe availability. A tracked list of suitable roles rather than random applications.
Prepare Tailor CV, cover letter, portfolio and interview examples. A reusable evidence bank with role-specific edits.
Verify Confirm work permission, university status, contract and pay. Written compliance record before the start date.
Convert Complete the role well, document outcomes and keep searching for the next step. A reference, stronger CV bullets and a clearer graduate target.
