Graduate Jobs in the UK for International Students

International graduates can compete for UK graduate jobs through several immigration routes, but a job advert, a graduate scheme and visa sponsorship are three different things. Build a search around eligible roles, employer evidence, realistic salaries and the permission you will hold when work starts.

Important: Job and visa eligibility depends on the occupation code, salary, employer, application date and personal history. Treat sponsor-register entries and thresholds as screening evidence, not a promise of sponsorship.
Market basics

Understand the types of graduate opportunity

Different recruitment labels lead to different timelines and expectations.

Opportunity Typical structure International-student check
Graduate scheme A structured cohort programme with rotations or formal training. Confirm start date, work permission wording and any sponsorship policy.
Graduate job An entry-level permanent role advertised when a vacancy exists. Match duties to the correct occupation code rather than relying on the title.
Fixed-term role A contract for a defined project or period. Check that the role lasts within your permission and whether later sponsorship is possible.
Internship to hire Short experience that may lead to recruitment but gives no guarantee. Verify pay, status and visa compliance for the internship itself.
Work routes

Know what your immigration route changes

Employers need accurate information about the permission covering the role.

Route Work position Main limit
Student permission Work is restricted by course level, term dates and conditions; permanent full-time vacancies are normally restricted. Do not present Student hours as unrestricted graduate work permission.
Graduate visa Permits most jobs, job searching and self-employment without employer sponsorship. It cannot be extended and lasts two years for applications by 31 December 2026, then 18 months from 1 January 2027; doctoral graduates receive three years.
Skilled Worker Requires an eligible job, approved sponsor, Certificate of Sponsorship and the applicable salary. The general threshold is normally £41,700 or the occupation going rate, whichever is higher, with route-specific reductions in qualifying cases.
Other routes Health and Care Worker, Global Talent, High Potential Individual and family routes have distinct tests. Use official guidance for eligibility rather than assuming the Skilled Worker route is the only option.
Sponsor research

Use the sponsor register intelligently

The official register shows licence status, not whether a company will sponsor a particular vacancy.

Check What it tells you What it does not tell you
Organisation name A named legal organisation appears as a licensed sponsor. That every brand, office or vacancy can sponsor.
Route and rating The licence route and current rating shown in the register. That the employer has an available Certificate of Sponsorship.
Vacancy wording The advert may state right-to-work or sponsorship conditions. That a vague promise will satisfy occupation and salary rules.
Recruiter confirmation A named recruiter can explain policy for the specific role. That an informal answer replaces an immigration assessment.
Role eligibility

Screen a potential Skilled Worker job

A licensed employer is only one part of eligibility.

Element Question Evidence
Occupation code Do the actual duties fit an eligible SOC 2020 code? Employer’s code, job description and official eligible-occupation table.
Skill level Is the code higher skilled, or eligible under a permitted medium-skilled list or transition? Current Appendix Skilled Occupations and route rules.
Salary Does guaranteed basic gross pay meet both the applicable general threshold and going rate? Written salary, weekly hours and correct going-rate table.
Sponsorship Will the approved employer assign a valid Certificate of Sponsorship for this role? Formal employer confirmation and CoS reference at application stage.
Application strategy

Build evidence for UK graduate recruitment

Targeted proof helps an employer assess you quickly.

Asset Strong approach Common weakness
CV Use achievement bullets linking action, method and result to the criteria. A responsibilities list with no outcomes.
Cover letter Explain motivation for the organisation and provide two matched examples. Generic praise that could be sent anywhere.
Application form Answer every competency with specific, recent evidence. Copying the same example without addressing the question.
Online profile Keep title, dates, skills and portfolio consistent with the application. Conflicting dates or exaggerated proficiency.
Recruitment stages

Prepare for common graduate assessments

Many large schemes test candidates in several formats.

Stage Preparation Fairness action
Online tests Practise the format, instructions and timed conditions. Request a reasonable adjustment through the stated channel if needed.
Video interview Prepare concise examples and test sound, framing and connection. Use notes as prompts, not a script read to camera.
Assessment centre Practise group discussion, written analysis and presentation. Show collaboration and judgement, not dominance.
Final interview Research the role, team and current priorities; ask thoughtful questions. Clarify sponsorship respectfully and accurately when relevant.
Offer review

Check the whole offer before accepting

Salary alone does not show whether a role is workable or visa-eligible.

Item Verify Why
Contract Employer entity, title, duties, location, hours, salary, probation and notice. These facts affect both daily life and immigration assessment.
Start date It follows course completion and fits the permission or pending-application rules. Starting too early can breach Student conditions.
Visa support Who handles sponsorship, costs and timing, and what happens if a visa is refused. Avoids relying on a verbal assumption.
Total package Pension, holiday, relocation, training and realistic net living costs. Enables a fair comparison between locations and employers.
Weekly system

Run a measurable graduate job search

Consistency is more useful than bursts of untargeted applications.

Activity Weekly target Quality control
Research Add a small set of matched employers and live vacancies. Record sponsor status, closing date, route and eligibility questions.
Tailoring Submit fewer evidence-led applications rather than mass copies. Score each draft against every essential criterion.
Practice Complete one test, interview or assessment exercise. Review errors and update an evidence bank.
Follow-up Track outcomes, deadlines and recruiter responses. Adjust channels and examples using real conversion data.
