Minimum Wage and Student Working Hours in the UK

Check April 2026 minimum wage rates, Student visa weekly limits, term dates, payslips and deductions before accepting or tracking work.

Fact-checked: 24 July 2026
Course-specific guidance
Official-source workflow

Important: Age, apprentice status, worker status and deductions affect minimum wage calculation. Student permission controls work type and hours even when an employer offers more. Rates usually change each April; verify the current GOV.UK table and your eVisa before relying on any figure.
Rates

Use the statutory rate for the pay period

The current table effective from 1 April 2026 is age-based.

Category Hourly minimum Important condition
Age 21 and over £12.71 National Living Wage rate from 1 April 2026.
Age 18 to 20 £10.85 Use age during the relevant pay reference period.
Under 18 £8.00 Applies above compulsory school leaving age.
Apprentice £8.00 Apprentice criteria apply; older apprentices may qualify for age rate after first year.
Visa hours

Keep immigration limits separate from pay rights

Being paid correctly does not make excess hours lawful.

Course situation Term-time maximum Verify
Eligible full-time degree level Up to 20 hours per week under current Student rules. Sponsor, level, eVisa and university conditions.
Eligible full-time below degree Up to 10 hours per week. Track-record sponsor and qualification level.
Part-time or other study No employment in the general current framework. Your own permission controls.
Outside term time Eligible students may work full time, subject to course-specific dates and activity bans. Written sponsor dates; research courses need care.
Week

Count hours Monday to Sunday

The limit is not averaged across a month.

Situation Count Control
One employer All work in the seven-day week. Keep rota and time record.
Two employers Add hours from both even if neither sees the other rota. Use one personal tracker.
Extra shift Counts in the week performed. Decline before the total exceeds permission.
Irregular arrangements On-call, paid leave or unusual time may require advice. Ask the university international adviser.
Paid time

Check all working time used in minimum wage

Underpayment can hide around the visible shift.

Time Question Evidence
Opening or closing Must you prepare, clean or cash up beyond rostered time? Actual clock and manager instruction.
Training Is required training paid where law requires? Invitation, attendance and payslip.
Handover or security Does required time occur before or after scheduled shift? Personal record of arrival, release and duty.
Travel between sites Is travel required during work? Locations, time and expense policy.
Deductions

Calculate pay after work-related costs

Some deductions or required payments can reduce minimum-wage pay.

Deduction Check Risk
Uniform Must the worker buy clothing or equipment for the job? Cost can affect minimum-wage calculation.
Accommodation Special accommodation-offset rules apply. Employer-provided housing does not permit unlimited deductions.
Cash shortage Retail deductions have rules and must be authorised. Pressure to repay without written basis.
Tax and National Insurance Lawful payroll deductions appear on the payslip. Confuse net pay with the statutory gross hourly rate.
Payslip

Reconcile every payday

GOV.UK says workers should receive a payslip on or before payday.

Line Check Action
Hours Matches actual paid time when pay varies by hours. Compare with rota and clock records.
Gross pay Rate multiplied correctly plus eligible additions. Query missing or lower rate.
Deductions Tax, National Insurance and other items explained. Ask payroll for fixed-deduction statement.
Net pay Amount reaches the correct account. Report unfamiliar account or transfer change immediately.
Underpayment

Raise concerns with evidence

Keep calm records and use official rights routes.

Step Action Keep
Calculate Use GOV.UK minimum wage calculator and actual hours. Rate, age, pay period and deductions.
Ask employer Request a written explanation and correction. Email, payslips and rota.
Seek advice Use university careers or student union for support and official work-rights routes. Do not let an employer threaten visa consequences to silence a pay claim.
Protect visa Continue to obey hour and activity limits during dispute. Pay disagreement does not expand permission.
Decision

Assess the true value of the job

Legal minimum is one part of whether work is sustainable.

Factor Include Reject when
Net value Pay after tax, travel, required clothing and meals. Costs make the shift uneconomic or deductions look unlawful.
Study impact Commute, recovery, assessment and attendance. Legal maximum harms the course.
Reliability Guaranteed versus cancelled shifts and notice. Income is too uncertain for essential commitments.
Compliance Role, hours, rate, records and employer are lawful. Employer asks you to hide hours or accept cash off the books.
