UK Student Visa Biometrics: What to Expect

Why UKVI collects biometrics

UK Visas and Immigration uses biometric information to establish and check identity as part of the immigration application. Applicants are told during the online journey whether to attend a visa application centre or use the UK Immigration: ID Check app. A Nepali Student visa applicant should follow the route assigned in the submitted application rather than assuming an appointment is always required.

Before the appointment

1. Read the confirmation. Check the centre, date, time, applicant name, visa route and list of items to bring.
2. Check the live centre details. Hours and addresses can change. Use the official VFS Nepal-UK page.
3. Finish document upload. If self-upload was selected, make sure each file is readable and marked as submitted before the cutoff.
4. Prepare originals. Take whatever the personal confirmation and document checklist require.
5. Protect fingertips. Avoid mehndi, heavy dye or decoration that can interfere with scanning. Cuts or damage may require explanation or another instruction.
6. Plan arrival. Reach the centre at the time requested without arriving excessively early.

What to bring

The personal appointment letter is authoritative. Common items include:

• Current passport or travel document used in the application.
• Printed appointment confirmation.
• Submitted application or document checklist if instructed.
• Original documents where the booking confirmation requires them.
• Evidence of document-scanning, courier or other services purchased.
• Responsible-adult details for a child applicant.

Do not take unnecessary confidential originals just because another applicant did. Requirements can differ by route and document-upload choice. Keep a secure digital copy of the passport identity page and all submitted evidence.

Arrival and security

The centre checks the appointment and identity before allowing the applicant through. Access can be limited to the applicant, a caregiver or a responsible adult accompanying a child. Bag checks and restrictions on electronics may apply. Follow centre staff instructions and avoid bringing prohibited items.

The applicant must normally attend in person. Another person cannot provide fingerprints on the applicant’s behalf. A representative can help prepare the form, but identity enrolment belongs to the person applying.

Fingerprint scanning

The operator asks the applicant to place fingers on a digital scanner. The system captures fingerprint images, commonly across all ten digits. There is no ink, liquid or chemical and the scan should not mark the skin. Staff may ask you to reposition or rescan a finger if the first image is unclear.

Help the scanner capture a clear image

• Keep fingers clean and dry.
• Remove mehndi or other temporary decoration before the appointment where possible.
• Do not deliberately damage or abrade fingerprints.
• Tell staff about cuts, bandages, a missing finger or a medical limitation.
• Bring relevant medical evidence if the booking guidance asks for it.

If a fingerprint cannot be captured, do not panic or argue with staff. The centre records the issue and follows UKVI procedure. The applicant should provide any requested medical evidence.

Digital photograph

A live image is taken at the centre. Look towards the camera and follow instructions on expression and position. Sunglasses and tinted glasses are not suitable. Hair should not cover the eyes or important facial features.

A religious or medical head covering does not normally need to be removed, but the face must remain visible. Ask staff privately if a religious, medical, disability or gender-sensitive adjustment is needed. Contact the centre in advance where an adjustment may take time to arrange.

Children and biometrics

GOV.UK states that children under 16 must attend a visa application centre appointment with an adult over 18. Children under five must attend for a photograph but do not give fingerprints. The responsible-adult information in the application and appointment should be accurate.

Document checks at the appointment

Depending on the service chosen, supporting documents may already be self-uploaded or may be scanned at the centre. Staff can confirm transmission or perform a purchased scanning task, but VAC staff do not decide whether the evidence meets the Immigration Rules. They should not rewrite the applicant’s explanation or promise approval.

Check that the passport and submitted application reference are connected to the appointment. Retain any receipt that confirms biometrics and documents were submitted.

Is there an interview at biometrics?

A standard biometric enrolment is mainly an identity and document-submission process. It should not be confused with a UKVI credibility interview. However, UKVI can separately request an interview or additional information, and the Student visa page notes that a case may take longer if an interview or document verification is needed.

Answer routine identity or process questions accurately. If UKVI later schedules a credibility interview, follow that invitation and prepare separately.

Passport and eVisa under the current system

Current GOV.UK Student visa guidance says an applicant who attends a centre takes the passport and can collect it on the day. Follow the exact instruction generated for your case because travel-document handling can vary. Do not leave without understanding whether the centre has retained any item and how it will be returned.

If the application succeeds, the Student visa guidance says the applicant receives an eVisa, a digital record of immigration status. The decision message explains how to create or use a UKVI account. Link the passport that will be used for travel and check the eVisa details.

After biometrics

1. Keep the biometric enrolment receipt and all application references.
2. Monitor the application email and spam folder.
3. Respond to any UKVI request by the stated deadline.
4. Do not submit unrequested replacement documents through unofficial channels.
5. Check decision timing from the point the application, identity and documents are complete.
6. Avoid non-refundable travel until permission is confirmed.

GOV.UK says an outside-UK Student visa decision is usually made within three weeks, but verification, interviews or personal circumstances can extend the time. An optional priority service changes the service target only when officially available; it does not remove eligibility checks.
