UK Universities Offering Placement Years

A course-level guide to finding assessed UK placement-year options and comparing support, fees, visa structure and the risk that placement is competitive.

Important: A course offering a placement year does not usually guarantee that every student will obtain a placement. Employer recruitment can be competitive, so verify the fallback course, support offered, fees and CAS consequences before applying.

Understand when a placement belongs to the course

The visa framework and course design should align before you rely on placement experience.

Integral and assessed The placement must form an integral and assessed part of the course. Confirm how assessment appears in the module or programme specification.
General duration The placement must normally not exceed one third of the total course length, subject to stated exceptions. Check the published study and placement pattern.
Eligible degree-level exception At degree level or above with an eligible higher education provider, it may be up to half of the course. Confirm provider status, course level and CAS structure.
Student sponsor The course and CAS must be managed by an eligible Student sponsor under the rules. Check the current sponsor register and the named teaching location.

Evaluate learning value, not just the word “placement”

The strongest option connects work experience back to assessed academic outcomes.
