Important: Fares, payment methods, discount schemes and service areas change by operator and location. London rules do not apply across the UK, Railcard discounts have time and ticket restrictions, and a student card alone does not automatically create a transport discount.

A normal campus journey can involve more than one operator and fare structure.

Peak journey Travel or simulate the weekday time needed for compulsory classes. Include wait, interchange and walking buffer.
Late return Check last realistic service, stop location, lighting and fallback cost. Do not rely on a connection you cannot use after libraries or work.
Accessibility and luggage Check step-free information, assistance and crowded sections. Use operator guidance and allow booking time where assistance is required.

Use the correct medium for the local system

Tapping incorrectly can create a maximum or penalty fare.

Contactless card or phone Accepted modes, tap-in and tap-out rules, daily or weekly capping and foreign-card fees. Switching between phone and physical card during one journey.
Smartcard or app Registration, loading tickets, activation and device battery requirements. Boarding before a new pass is activated.
Paper or machine ticket Route, date, peak restriction and reservation if applicable. Choosing a cheaper ticket that is invalid on the service used.

26–30 or other Railcards Eligibility may come from age, disability, companion or travel pattern. Exact card rules rather than assuming every postgraduate qualifies as a student.
University shuttle Campus or residence links may be free or subsidised. Term dates, capacity, booking, accessibility and whether it replaces public service.

Do not buy the longest pass before the timetable and housing route are stable.

Pay as you go Travel is irregular or capped payment is available. Expected peak and off-peak trips plus foreign transaction fees.
Weekly or monthly pass The same covered route is used often. Pass cost divided by realistic journeys, not theoretical maximum use.
Term pass Course and accommodation are stable and refund rules are acceptable. Exclude holidays, placements and reading weeks outside normal travel.
Railcard plus tickets Longer rail trips make eligible savings exceed card cost. Use official fare examples with the intended travel time and ticket type.
