Medium of Instruction MOI for UK Universities from Nepal 2026

A Medium of Instruction letter confirms the language used to teach and assess a previous qualification. Some UK universities accept MOI from specified recognised institutions and recent graduates; others do not accept it or require additional evidence.

Quick answer: MOI is not a UK-wide IELTS waiver. Check the target university’s Nepal and English-language pages, the course exceptions, recency rules, the exact issuing institution and whether the university will use the evidence for the CAS.

What an MOI letter should contain

The student’s full name and identifying details.
The exact qualification and study dates.
Confirmation that teaching and assessment were in English for the required period.
The awarding institution’s official letterhead.
Date, signature, role and verifiable contact details.
Any additional wording required by the UK university.

Obtain the letter from the authorised awarding institution or office specified by the receiving university. An affiliated college letter may not be accepted when the policy requires the university itself.

Official university policies differ

The University of East London Nepal page currently publishes an MOI route for listed Nepal universities alongside other English evidence. Kingston University describes MOI evidence for qualifying English-taught degrees and academic-recognition conditions.

Other institutions use narrower or opposite rules. Glasgow Caledonian University currently says MOI letters are not accepted as English evidence. These examples show why an “MOI accepting universities” list becomes unreliable without a course and intake check.

Admission evidence versus visa evidence

For a Student visa, a degree taught in English outside the UK can be one way to prove English, but current GOV.UK guidance says an overseas English-taught degree used in that route needs an Ecctis assessment confirming UK bachelor’s equivalence and English instruction.

Separately, for degree-level study an eligible higher education provider with a track record of compliance may assess English at CEFR B2 using its accepted method and record that assessment on the CAS. Therefore, the sponsor’s written decision and CAS method matter; an MOI letter alone is not a universal immigration document.

Common university restrictions

Only degrees, not short courses or school study.
Only named awarding institutions or countries.
Qualification completed within a stated number of years.
Teaching and examination both fully in English.
Specified course bands only; higher-band or regulated courses excluded.
Interview, internal test or additional English evidence still required.

Open the exact course English requirement.
Open the university’s Nepal country page.
Search the accepted-qualifications policy for MOI.
Confirm the awarding institution, degree level and recency.
Request the required wording from admissions.
Ask whether the MOI will satisfy admission and be recorded for CAS.
Keep a test alternative and deadline plan.

When an English test may be safer

An accepted test may create a wider shortlist when universities use different MOI policies, the degree is old, the awarding institution is not listed, the course has a high language band or a pathway requires a SELT. The right decision balances policy certainty, time, cost and preparation.

Fraud and verification risks

Universities may verify the letter directly. Never edit a transcript, create a false MOI, use an unauthorised signatory or conceal the real teaching language. False evidence can lead to refusal, offer withdrawal, CAS cancellation and future credibility problems.
