IELTS vs PTE for UK Study from Nepal 2026 Comparison
IELTS and PTE can both support UK university applications, but neither is automatically better for every Nepali student. The safer choice is the test version accepted by all shortlisted courses and suitable for any Student visa or pre-sessional requirement.
Quick answer: Compare the exact university score table, component minimums, approved test version, test-centre availability, your strongest response format and the time left before offer and CAS deadlines. Do not choose from a universal score-conversion chart.
University acceptance comes first
Many UK universities publish IELTS Academic and PTE Academic in their accepted-test tables, but course bands vary. For example, Queen’s University Belfast uses several English-language bands with different overall and component conditions. The table for one institution cannot be applied to another.
Check every course in the shortlist. A regulated, health, law, education, research or language-intensive programme may require a higher band or restrict the accepted test versions.
Academic tests and UKVI SELTs
University admission evidence and Secure English Language Test evidence are related but not identical. The current GOV.UK SELT list names IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI among approved four-skill products. If a SELT is required, it must be the approved version, taken at an approved location, with a valid reference.
For degree-level study, an eligible higher education provider can assess English at CEFR B2 through a method it accepts and record that method on the CAS. A foundation, pre-sessional or other route may have different rules. Ask the sponsoring university before booking.
Test format comparison
IELTS
- Academic reading, writing, listening and speaking.
- Speaking is normally a live interview with an examiner.
- Computer-delivered and paper formats may be available, but availability and result timing differ.
- Scores are reported in bands with overall and individual components.
PTE Academic
- Computer-based integrated speaking, writing, reading and listening tasks.
- Speaking responses are recorded through a headset rather than a face-to-face interview.
- Several tasks contribute to more than one skill area.
- Scores are reported numerically with communicative-skill results.
Use only current official test-provider descriptions because formats and scoring reports can change.
Which format may suit you?
IELTS may feel more natural if you prefer a human speaking conversation and clear skill sections. PTE may suit applicants who are comfortable speaking into a microphone, typing quickly and managing integrated computer tasks. The correct choice comes from a diagnostic test, not a stereotype that one test is “easy.”
Score and component planning
An overall score is not enough when a course requires minimum results in each component. Record the exact offer condition, then target a safety margin in every skill. Do not rely on an unofficial IELTS-to-PTE converter to decide whether an offer is met; the university’s equivalency table controls.
Test validity and deadlines
GOV.UK currently requires an approved SELT used for immigration to have been awarded within two years of the visa application. Universities also state their own validity rules. Work backwards from the intake, offer-condition, pre-sessional, CAS and visa deadlines.
Decision checklist
- List every shortlisted course and its English band.
- Confirm IELTS Academic/UKVI and PTE Academic/UKVI acceptance separately.
- Record overall and component minimums.
- Check whether a SELT is required for your route.
- Take one official-style diagnostic for each test.
- Compare test dates, approved centres and result timelines in Nepal.
- Choose one test and prepare deeply rather than switching repeatedly.
If you miss the score
The university may request a retake, offer an eligible pre-sessional English course, or accept another published qualification. A high overall result does not automatically cancel a weak component.
Use the separate IELTS requirements guide and PTE requirements guide for the detailed checks.
Common comparison mistakes
- Choosing only by advertising or a friend’s result.
- Confusing the standard academic test with the UKVI version.
- Checking the overall score but not components.
- Assuming every university accepts both.
- Using an old test format or score chart.
- Booking too late for a retake or pre-sessional route.

Frequently asked questions
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
No test is universally easier. Format fit, English level and preparation quality determine the practical difficulty.
Can I use standard PTE or IELTS for every UK route?
No. When a SELT is required, book the approved UKVI product and centre specified by official guidance.
Can I combine scores from two tests?
Do not assume this. The university and any applicable SELT rules decide whether one sitting or a specific result is required.
Which test should I prepare at MKS Education?
Choose after matching the tests against all target courses and taking diagnostics. MKS Education can support preparation but cannot guarantee a score.
