What Happens After UK Student Visa Biometrics?

After biometric enrolment, the visa application centre sends the identity record and submitted documents into the UKVI process. UKVI may decide the application, verify evidence, request more information or arrange an interview. The applicant is notified by email or letter when a decision is made.

Quick answer: Keep the biometric receipt, monitor email and spam, respond to official requests by their deadline, and check the current processing-time service using the biometrics date. Do not contact UKVI while the application remains within the published processing time. If approved, current applicants receive an eVisa and must check it before travel.

When processing time starts

For an applicant who attends a visa application centre, GOV.UK says processing starts when the applicant provides fingerprints and a photograph. For an applicant using the UK Immigration: ID Check app, it starts when identity, documents and the online application are submitted through that route.

Use the official processing-time checker and enter the date identity was verified. A submission or fee-payment date is not always the start of the service period.

What the visa application centre does

The VAC collects biometrics and transmits documents through the contracted process. It does not decide the Student visa. After the appointment:

  • The biometric record is linked to the visa application.
  • Self-uploaded or scanned supporting evidence becomes available for consideration.
  • The applicant receives or retains a receipt and application references.
  • Passport handling follows the current eVisa and centre instruction.

Do not ask VAC staff to predict approval. Optional scanning, lounge or courier services do not change the Immigration Rules.

Passport handling in the eVisa system

The UK moved successful new applicants to digital status and stopped issuing visa vignette stickers from 1 July 2026. GOV.UK’s current Student visa page says an applicant who attends the centre takes the passport and can collect it on the day. The eVisa update also says that if a VAC holds a passport for most visa types, it will return it while processing continues.

Follow the personal receipt. If the VAC tells you it retained a travel document, wait for its collection message and do not visit without contact. Retaining a passport does not mean the visa has been granted.

Possible next events

Event What it means What to do
No immediate message Application is being considered within the service period Wait and monitor the official email
Document verification UKVI contacts a bank, university, sponsor or issuer Ensure organisations can respond accurately
Request for evidence UKVI asks for a specific item or clarification Respond through the named channel by the deadline
Credibility interview UKVI needs to assess genuine-student factors Attend and answer from the submitted application
Underpayment request Visa fee or IHS balance is due Pay through the official instruction within the stated time
Delay notification Case will take longer than the usual service time Read the reason and provide anything requested
Decision email A decision has been made Follow the success or refusal instructions

Why a case may take longer

GOV.UK lists reasons including inaccurate information requiring consideration, further financial evidence, document verification, an interview, personal circumstances such as a criminal conviction, increased demand and technical outages. A delay alone does not show that the application will be refused.

Peak student season can increase pressure. Do not submit duplicate applications or send unrequested evidence just because another applicant received an earlier result.

Monitoring email safely

  • Check the email address used in the application every day.
  • Review spam, junk and filtered folders.
  • Keep the UKVI, GWF and VAC references available.
  • Verify payment or document requests against the application account.
  • Do not share passwords, card OTPs or recovery codes.
  • Save every message and attachment.

A message may say only that a decision has been made, while the detailed outcome appears through an attached notice, account or eVisa instruction. Do not rely on the email subject line alone.

Do not chase within the service time

Official processing guidance says applicants do not need to contact UKVI to track a case still within current processing times and that UKVI cannot provide status information in that period. Use the processing-time checker.

If the current time has passed and UKVI has not contacted you, use the official contact route. A paid enquiry cannot guarantee a decision or alter eligibility.

Responding to a document request

  1. Read the exact item, date and submission channel.
  2. Check that the request is genuine.
  3. Prepare only the requested evidence and a clear index.
  4. Keep names, dates and figures consistent with the original application.
  5. Use certified translations where required.
  6. Submit before the deadline and save proof.
  7. If an item cannot be obtained, explain truthfully through the permitted channel rather than fabricating it.

A general email to an unrelated UKVI address may not attach material to the case. Follow the address or portal named in the request.

If a credibility interview is requested

Review the form, CAS, course, university, finances, accommodation, immigration history and post-study plan. UKVI genuine-student guidance allows telephone interviews or invitations to a designated time and location. Failure to attend without an acceptable reason can lead to refusal.

Do not use a hidden prompt, agent script or another person’s answers. The interview is compared with the application.

If the application is successful

Current GOV.UK guidance says successful applicants receive an eVisa. The decision message explains how to access it through a UKVI account. Before travel:

  • Sign in and view the eVisa.
  • Check name, nationality, date of birth and immigration status.
  • Check permission start and end dates.
  • Review work and study conditions.
  • Link the passport that will be used for travel.
  • Report any eVisa error through the official service.

An eVisa is digital status. It does not remove the need to carry the linked passport. A form for accompanying an eVisa may be issued in some cases; follow the decision instructions if this applies.

If the application is refused

The refusal notice explains the rule or evidence issue and whether the applicant can seek administrative review. Do not submit a new application or review request before understanding the decision. A new application can withdraw a pending administrative review.

For an outside-UK refusal eligible for administrative review, current GOV.UK guidance gives 28 days from receiving the decision and charges £80. Administrative review looks for a caseworking error; it is not a general opportunity to rebuild a weak application with new evidence.

IHS refund after refusal

GOV.UK says a refused visa application normally receives a full IHS refund automatically. The visa application fee is generally not refunded once processing has started. IHS refunds are usually made within six weeks, although review or appeal activity can affect timing.

Do not book travel too early

You must not travel to the UK until the visa is approved. Even after a success email, check the eVisa and ensure the travel document is linked. Avoid non-refundable tickets while the application is pending.

Common mistakes after biometrics

  • Counting processing from the online form rather than identity verification.
  • Ignoring spam or a bank verification request.
  • Sending unrequested documents repeatedly.
  • Paying an unofficial “status agent”.
  • Missing an interview or evidence deadline.
  • Assuming passport return means approval.
  • Buying non-refundable travel before the decision.
  • Failing to check eVisa details before travel.
