Duolingo English Test for UK Universities from Nepal 2026 Guide
Some UK universities accept the Duolingo English Test for selected degree courses, while others do not accept it or restrict its use by course, intake, test date or visa situation. Acceptance must be confirmed on the current university and course pages.
Quick answer: Do not treat the Duolingo English Test as a UK-wide English route. Check the exact DET score and subscore requirements, result validity, delivery rules and whether the university will use it when assigning your CAS.
University acceptance is not universal
Current official pages show different practices. The University of Plymouth publishes Duolingo requirements for eligible degree courses and warns that some courses need higher standards. Queen’s University Belfast publishes several DET bands and subskill conditions. Heriot-Watt University distinguishes course bands and circumstances where a SELT is required.
These examples prove variation; they are not a complete or permanent list. A university can change test acceptance for a future intake.
DET and the UKVI SELT list
The current GOV.UK approved Secure English Language Test list names approved products from IELTS, Pearson, LANGUAGECERT, PSI and Trinity, depending on location. It does not list the Duolingo English Test as a SELT.
However, for degree-level study an eligible higher education provider with a track record of compliance may assess English itself at CEFR B2 using a method it accepts and record that method on the CAS. That does not mean every provider can or will use DET. Ask the sponsoring university to confirm the admission and CAS position in writing.
Check all score conditions
A DET requirement can include an overall score, minimum individual or integrated subscores and a validity period. The required band can change by course. Nursing, teaching, law, research and other language-intensive or regulated courses may have different standards or may not accept DET.
Safe verification sequence
- Open the exact course’s English-language requirement.
- Open the university’s alternative-test table.
- Confirm that DET is accepted for your level, course and intake.
- Record overall and subscore minimums.
- Check test-date and result-validity rules.
- Ask whether DET will be recorded as the English assessment on your CAS.
- Confirm whether a SELT is instead required for a foundation, pre-sessional or other route.
Test integrity and environment
DET is remotely proctored. Follow the current official identity, room, equipment, behaviour and test-security requirements exactly. Invalidated or uncertified results can delay an offer or CAS. Never use another person, prohibited device, prepared material or remote assistance.
When DET may be a practical option
It can suit an applicant whose confirmed university accepts it, who has a compliant testing environment and who can meet the required skills. Convenience should come after acceptance checks. A quick booking has little value if the intended course needs another test.
When another test may be safer
Consider an accepted SELT or another university-approved test when the target institutions have mixed DET policies, when a pathway or pre-sessional course requires a SELT, or when the CAS team cannot confirm DET use. If your shortlist is still changing, compare the number of target courses accepting each test before preparing.
Use the PTE requirements guide, IELTS requirements guide and without IELTS guide to compare routes.
Preparation priorities
- Read the current official test format and rules.
- Diagnose literacy, comprehension, conversation and production skills.
- Practise academic reading and precise written responses.
- Improve spontaneous speaking rather than memorising scripts.
- Complete full practice under a compliant environment.
- Leave time for retesting or an alternative if the result is not certified.
Common DET mistakes
- Assuming “UK accepted” means every university and course.
- Ignoring subscores.
- Confusing university acceptance with SELT status.
- Using an old accepted-test list.
- Breaking remote-proctoring rules.
- Waiting until the CAS deadline to clarify the test.

Frequently asked questions
Is Duolingo accepted for a UK Student visa?
DET is not named on the current approved-SELT list. A qualifying degree-level sponsor may use its own English assessment method, but you must obtain confirmation from the university for admission and CAS.
What DET score do UK universities need?
There is no universal score. Overall and subscore requirements vary by university and course.
Can I use DET for a foundation or pre-sessional course?
Do not assume so. Below-degree and pre-sessional routes can have specific SELT rules; check the sponsor’s written instructions.
Can acceptance change after I take the test?
Policies can change by intake. Verify before booking and again when satisfying the offer condition.
