PTE Requirements for UK Universities from Nepal 2026 Guide

Many UK universities accept Pearson Test of English evidence for selected courses, but the accepted test version, overall score, component minimums and visa use vary. The offer and university English-language page are the final admission instructions.

Quick answer: Check whether your course accepts PTE Academic, whether it requires an in-person test, what each component must achieve and whether PTE Academic UKVI is required for your visa or pathway situation. Do not book from a generic score table.

PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI

PTE Academic can be accepted by a university as academic English evidence. PTE Academic UKVI is the Pearson Secure English Language Test version named on the current GOV.UK approved SELT list. The test content may be closely related, but the booking, approved-centre and result-reference requirements matter when a SELT is required.

Before booking, ask the university whether it needs a UKVI SELT for your course, sponsor status, pre-sessional route or CAS. A standard PTE Academic result cannot be assumed to replace PTE Academic UKVI where an approved SELT is specifically required.

There is no universal PTE score

Universities map PTE scores to different English bands. Courses in law, education, health, journalism or research can require a higher band than general business or computing courses. An overall score can also be insufficient when one listening, reading, writing or speaking component is below the stated minimum.

For a current official example, Queen’s University Belfast publishes multiple PTE Academic bands and component conditions rather than one university-wide number. Use such pages only for that institution and then check the course’s English band.

University admission versus Student visa

These are connected but distinct. For degree-level study, the Student route normally requires CEFR B2 in all four components. An eligible higher education provider with a track record of compliance may assess English through its own accepted method and record that assessment on the CAS. Where a SELT is required, it must be an approved test taken at an approved location with a valid reference.

Read GOV.UK Student visa English guidance and follow the CAS instructions from the sponsoring university.

How to check a PTE requirement

  1. Open the exact course page and note its English band.
  2. Open the university’s accepted English tests table.
  3. Confirm the PTE test name and delivery mode accepted.
  4. Record the overall and every component minimum.
  5. Check the test-result validity period for the intended start and CAS dates.
  6. Ask whether PTE Academic UKVI is required for a pathway or pre-sessional course.
  7. Keep the official score report and share it through the authorised verification process.

Score validity and test date

GOV.UK currently says an approved SELT used for immigration must have been awarded within two years of the application. Universities also publish their own English-evidence validity rules. Plan the test so the result remains valid through admission, CAS and visa stages.

Preparation priorities

  • Take a diagnostic test in all four skills.
  • Learn the current task types and timing from Pearson’s official materials.
  • Practise clear speaking and structured writing rather than memorised content.
  • Build listening note-taking and academic reading speed.
  • Review recurring grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary weaknesses.
  • Use timed full mock tests before booking the final attempt.

Scores and task formats can change. Use current official test information, not an old coaching video.

If your score misses one component

Read the offer carefully. The university may require a retake, allow a pre-sessional course, accept another listed test or keep the condition unmet. Do not assume a strong overall score cancels a component minimum.

Compare options with the IELTS requirements guide and the UK without IELTS guide.

Common PTE mistakes

  • Booking standard PTE when the route requires PTE Academic UKVI.
  • Checking only the overall score.
  • Using a university-wide table without the course band.
  • Taking an online or at-home version not accepted by the university.
  • Testing too early and reaching the validity limit.
  • Sending edited screenshots instead of official verification.

Frequently asked questions

Do all UK universities accept PTE?

No. Acceptance, version and scores are institution- and course-specific.

Is PTE Academic the same as PTE Academic UKVI for visa use?

PTE Academic UKVI is the named approved SELT version. Confirm which version your sponsor and visa route require before booking.

Can a university accept PTE below its published score?

Only the university can decide. A component shortfall normally keeps the English condition unmet unless an approved alternative is offered.

What CEFR level is normally required for a degree?

The Student route normally requires B2 for degree-level study; the sponsor must record the accepted method on the CAS.
