Begin with a realistic baseline under current GRE conditions. Record the Quantitative and Verbal scaled results separately and keep Analytical Writing separate. Do not reduce the diagnosis to one combined number. Classify every missed or unstable response by measure, content area, question family, difficulty, time and cause. Include correct guesses and answers that took too long, because they may fail under a different question mix.

Rebuild prerequisites before chasing advanced shortcuts. ETS Math Review covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis concepts that may appear on the General Test. A student who cannot translate ratios, equations, units or graphs consistently needs concept explanation and written practice before heavy timing. In Verbal, vocabulary retrieval must connect to sentence logic, passage structure, evidence and answer-choice elimination. Analytical Writing needs a defensible position, relevant reasons, organised development and controlled language rather than a memorised universal template.

Set a score path without pretending it is linear. Convert the target into the Quant and Verbal balance required by the student’s intended programmes, then set weekly skill goals: for example, accurate algebra translation, evidence-based reading decisions or fewer careless comparison errors. An early improvement can come from removing repeatable mistakes, while later points may require more difficult transfer. Review the trend across several fresh sections instead of expecting the same gain every week.

Use official practice strategically. ETS recommends knowing the test content, question types, directions, timing and administrative procedures. POWERPREP provides a simulated computer-delivered experience and should be used as a planned baseline or checkpoint, not replayed until answers are familiar. Between checkpoints, use targeted lessons, physical-book work, app sets and fresh mixed questions. After each set, explain the correct method and why the alternatives fail.

Build pacing only after the method is dependable. The GRE software allows movement and review within a section, and ETS advises answering every Quant and Verbal question because incorrect answers do not create a penalty. Practise a deliberate triage routine: solve clear questions, mark expensive ones, preserve time and return before the section ends. Timed evidence should include accuracy, unanswered items and decision quality, not only the final score.
