SAT Rhetorical Synthesis Questions Strategy
Translate the prompt’s communication goal into filters, then choose the option that uses accurate notes to accomplish that exact purpose.

The best synthesis selects and connects only the information needed for the requested rhetorical action.
Recognise the official skill. College Board places Rhetorical Synthesis under Expression of Ideas, and its Student Question Bank guide associates it with prompts asking which choice most effectively uses information from a student’s notes to accomplish a goal. The notes are a source set, not a paragraph that must be condensed completely.
Rewrite the goal as a checklist. If the task asks to introduce a person to an unfamiliar audience, include identity and relevant significance. If it asks to emphasise a contrast, the sentence must include both sides and a clear difference. If it asks to show a development over time, select dates or stages and make the sequence visible. Audience and purpose decide what counts as relevant.
Scan the notes only after the filters are clear. Mark facts that directly serve the goal and ignore interesting background that does not. Never combine details into a claim the notes do not support. Pay attention to dates, quantities, names and cause-effect language because distractors can alter a relationship while preserving familiar words.
Predict the sentence skeleton. For comparison, think A does X whereas B does Y. For an introduction, think name plus role plus significance. For an example, think claim followed by the most representative evidence. This prediction makes it easier to reject choices that list facts without the required relationship or use a tone unsuitable for the audience.
Evaluate each option on three tests: factual accuracy, goal relevance and rhetorical effectiveness. A choice fails if any note is distorted, if it omits a required element, or if the relationship remains unclear. Extra detail is not automatically helpful. The correct answer is often the one with disciplined selection and precise connection.
